I'm looking to make a simple (yet attractive!) website for the purpose of selling goods on the net.

- What are the kind of things involved in the whole process?
- How much time does it take?
- Can anyone without much computer skill learn?
- Should I outsource eg. to IT students?

I really want an idea as to how it's done, so any answers would be greatly appreciated =]

Thanks!!

Depends on what functionality you want, certain things to think of:

Will you be 'selling' or automating any part of the site (ie, things updated/added/bought etc) or will it be a static site that just sits there as an online 'flyer' of sorts?

Do you have a 'design' of the site in mind already? (This will speed up the design process if you know what it is you're doing, rather than 'can you make me a site')

Timeframe wise, if you have a bit of time, you CAN learn the basics of a site, therefore you can also learn how to update it once its built, otherwise, outsourcing will be faster, but you'll not know what the fuck is up with the code if you want to make changes, or if that person is ripping you off etc.

Learning any coding language is like learning a different linguistic language, it all depends on you having the time to practice and learn all the correct grammar/syntaxes of the new language and also to think in that language.

it's not hard to learn how to do it yourself but it is quite time consuming (100+ hours) and you will get frustrated trying to root out the multitude of bugs/errors you'll inevitably encounter, so it's probably best to outsource it unless you already have an interest in programming and stuff and would like to learn how to do it for the sake of knowing how to do it as opposed to just so you can make this one site.

Html for you wouldnt be the right way. Go ahead and use MS 'frontpage', its basically like paint and word combined that automatically convert your texts and pics into html code. Then just use a FTP to upload your website to your desired web hoster.

Hint: Right click on a website that you think looks cool, then go to view source, copy the codes and paste them in frontpage, and waalaa, uve got a cool homepage. :D

I wouldnt advise that unless you want to get sued!

No, that's awful. If she's going to 'learn' how to do basic HTML, at least use something that isn't restricted to a program which inserts so much crap code into the source :|

At least use Dreamweaver or GoLive at the very least if you're not going to completely hand code it.

As what AsyLum said, it depends on the functionality you want your site to have.

Generally it will take quite some time to learn how to create good webpages - if you want more interactive features such as a shopping cart etc, then you might as well outsource it completely and have a more professional looking website rather than using your own time to learn create one.

However if you are interested in it shouldn't be too hard to start off.
Create a website | Free Beginner Guide is a good place to start off, or simply search for something like "creating a website for beginners" etc.
