As far as I'm aware, stylistic features are the ways through which aspects of texts, such as words, sentences and images, are arranged, and how they affect meaning. Style can distinguish the work of individual authors (for example Jennings' stories, Lawson's poems) as well as the work of a particular period (for example Elizabethan drama, nineteenth-century novels). Examples of stylistic features are narrative viewpoint, structure of stanzas, juxtaposition, use of figurative language and tone.
Let's elaborate on some of the aforementioned examples:
A narrative viewpoint essentially refers to the person/entity that is narrating the plot or events of a story. Consider the example quote
"As the boy played his video game, birds across the road flocked around a fountain." This narrator is not a character in the story, rather they stand in for the author or reader observing the fictional universe.
A juxtaposition involves placing one character, idea, theme, object, setting, etc. parallel to another in order to compare and contrast the two. Consider the sentence
"What's good for the goose is good for the gander". In this case, the female goose is a contrast to the male gander. At the same time, what is good for one is good for the other.
Figurative language is language
, words and/or expressions whose meaning extends beyond their literal interpretation. It is often used to express links between ideas, characters and concepts or subtly tie into overall themes. Figurative language includes metaphors, similes, hyperbole, metonymy, personification, etc. They are also frequently used to describe characters and things. Consider the following quote:
“A handsome manor house grew out of the darkness at the end of the straight drive.”
Lastly, tone refers to the way through which a composer or character expresses their feelings. These are typically conveyed through word choice. Tone is considered a common technique and is therefore useful to discuss in your responses.
There are numerous ways to describe tones. They include:
- Aggressive
- Curious
- Humorous
- Objective
- Sentimental
I hope this helps!
