Some hsc sources just skim over this topic saying the mutation doesn't affect phenotype, but some resources talk about regulators, promotors, rDNA, etc function.

What do we need to know about this?

thanks

You should know that non-coding DNA can regulate transcription and gene expression through sequences like promoters, enhancers and silencers (you don't need to know these in too much depth, but know that they exist and serve functions), and also serves structural roles, such as in telomeres, or to code for functional RNA such as rRNA, tRNA, etc.

I doubt they will ever ask a major question on this though. It would only really show up in multiple choice Qs that test whether you recognise non-coding DNA's role rather than dismissing it as "junk" DNA
