Seriously, this may sound like the dumbest question ever. Though what does it mean when it says, "Implications of Population Trends". How would I answer a qeustion in relation to this?

As the years go by in Australia, what are the effects and impacts of the population trends we see now. In this case, we're facing an older population in the future.

Effects could include increased spending on health and aged care services and facilities, impacts on the economy due to retirements (very general) etc.

it means the way australia's population is changing and the factors which are resulting from it
ie. australia's population has increased greatly since the post ww2 period due to arthur calwell's 'populate or perish' and also because of the baby boomer incentive.

implications:

the population of the baby boomer period are reaching retirement age- this means that there are too many old people in australia, not enough young ones in the workforce and as a result of that taxation will increase dramatically as there will not be enough people paying tax

other implications of population trends include the australian government's obligations to provide services such as nursing homes and health care to the older population

needs which should be provided by the government (concerning population trends) include:
  • traffic control
  • air and water management
  • accomodation
  • providing infrastructyre
  • employment

yep and you can also talk about the governments policies in regards to managing those population trends e.g. superannuation--- to get people to fund their own retirement, the baby bonus-- to encourage people to have more kids...you can incorporate a few of Peter Costello's slogan's like 'one for the mum, one for the dad, one for the country'....

If I get questions like this in a test I just think 'Ok, what are the trends'. The trends are:

  • Aging population (living longer and birth rate declining)
  • Growing population (migration, higher life expectancy, more births than deaths)
  • Urbanisation
  • Flow of people to coastal areas
So to start off with these are the main things you'll be talking about. Now, the main question is the implications of these, i.e future impacts, what will happen because of these trends. So you think through and discuss each one:

  • Aging population - More spending on health and aged care, smaller workforce in comparison
  • Growing population - ecological sustainability (ecological 'footprint'), implications on urban planning (transport, health care etc.)
  • Urbanisation - less people and therefore facilities in rural areas (I need to revise this point)
  • Flow of people to coastal areas - again urban planning, and less people in rural areas
So those are the thought processes that you have to go through to answer this question. Obviously you need to elaborate on all the points so you can write extended pieces on it.
