What happens if an average student ranked around middle of their cohort, in an average school scores 100 on their externals test. Would it boost their atar by an insane amount since externals is still 50% of their HSC.

yes it would boost their overall mark for that subject but it would also depend on their assessment mark. if someone got a 99 on the externals, but a 60 for their assessment mark, it would be around an 80 (i could be wrong with the calculation on that tho)
