Hi All,

This is an article written by an experienced tutor about what a tutor should prepare before the first lesson.

Here is a little bit more about ourselves, we launched a website, www.tutorsfield.com.au. Our goal is to build a platform where tutors can be easily searched by local students in Australia. To contribute to the tutoring / teaching industry, we hire and invite experienced tutors to write useful tips and articles once a month. And this is the article for this month, hope you will find it useful.

What should private tutors prepare before the first lesson? And how to identify students' strengths and weaknesses and formulate the right study plan?

Your first lesson will primarily be spent establishing the needs and abilities of your student.
1. Introduce yourselves to one another. You will be working closely and at length, and will need to build a comfortable rapport.
Preparation: Very brief introduction detailing, for example:
· Your current studies
· Tutoring experience
· Interests/hobbies
2. Discuss your student’s current studies. What are they aiming to pursue in future and what are they seeking to achieve through tutoring? What are their current study methods?
Preparation: Before the lesson, request copies of your student’s best and worst work to identify strengths and weaknesses and begin to formulate a study plan.
3. Outline your expectations. Will you set homework, and how regularly? What feedback will you provide?
Preparation: Carefully consider how you will manage the student. If you set homework, students are often concerned by the speed of feedback, so consider what realistic turnover period you may achieve.
