I think any way is fine for the first time, it doesn't matter if you're asking her out for a drink (the first time or something). But if you're asking to go out with her (as in 'be my gf') then it should definitely be done in person.

I have heard too many "stories" that girls are being asked out on msn, sms, phone, etc.......
