Hey
Of course we all pressure ourselves to work hard and achieve our best but sumtimes we get exposed to a whole lot of external pressure... What'z ur number 1 source of external pressure on ur studies?

i admit... the school principal!

I thought it would be interesting find out and share our concerns.

I have got barely any external pressure. My parents are not the typical asian parents, THANK GOD!

All the pressure is coming from myself. I got too much high expectations and I know I will be dissappointed one day.

But If I do have to say an external pressure, it will probably be friends cuz we are all very competitive with each other.

from the desire to beat the students i didn't like and to show the teachers i wasn't an idiot. it's not really pressure for me, just the motivation to do well

During my HSC all the pressure came from myself and the expectations I'd always held for myself, even though it wasn't possible for me to live up to them at the time. I didn't feel any pressure from my teachers or parents, not at all. they were just supportive and proud of me, I was the only one being hard on myself.

I said relatives because that included parents, siblings and cousins and aunties etc.

Everyone sees me as the one who's going to make it, to beat everyone in my family. To be prime minister and incredibly successful in 15 years time. My aunt who was incredibly successful and my recently graduated Harvard cousin has 'taken me by the hand'. This is conversation I had with her just recently.

Her: so you're still going for medicine
Me: Yeah... just I'm not sure I'll be able to make it, competition is really hard
Her: but look at your grades and duke of edinburgh and co-curriculars
Me: umm competition still hard... so anyway want to have a back up plan like arts/science or law or something in case everything ... sort of ...unconcievably falls through
Her: But we don't have a doctor in the family yet... *silence*

^^the way she said it though, as if... 'zita it's not really an unreasonable request'

Everyone just expects it, my brother in a drunken thing told me this

'we all know you're gonna make it sis, we're all smart but you're the only determined one'

mind you this is coming from a guy who got 96, and my other brother who got 94... without working too much

Doesn't help that my friends are like... MUST TOP STATE mentality going on

I'd like to know what happens if I screw up, I say this to people and they just laugh 'COME ON as if you'd screw up'

*runs away and screams*

Mostly parents but also relatives. Last 2 cousins who sat the exam got over UAI 90. I'm also kinda going head to head with one of my cousins and we both seem to be doing similar subjects and now in the family it's like " hey, you guys are up against each other now!":mad1:

And myself. I'm so lazy but somehow i think i can achieve without trying. OMG sophie!.

Man, you really should've made this a multiple-choice poll. I don't get pressure from just *one* group of people :S

and i now see ur rite!!

blow off ur steam everyone!

i can see i relate to alot of ppl here... especially those of u who get pressure from relatives... e.g

me: i got 78 for my English end of term

auntie: 78! (looks with shocked/disgusted expression) How could you? You SPEAK english. It's your language! What wrong with your english... your not that good hey... (and this goes on and on and on)

me: but... but... (thinks back to 2hr paper one, a horrible experience in which a short story was only a third completed and grossly edited to fit time limits, an essay without a proper conclusion... not to mention an aching hand)

sigh...

best advice ... LETS igNore all the preSSure who cares what everyone else thinks... in the end its ur uai/life/future!

good luCk everyone!

I find almost zero external ressure. There are expectations but I don't find it to be pressure. It shits me to tears every year in the Sydney morning Herald (And every other newspaper) come HSC time there is an obligatoy article entitled "Why do we put so much ressure on our kids?" Get over it, there is more talk about stress and pressure than there is actual stress and pressure.

Pressure from friends to work harder can actually be a good thing in moderation. I consider that motivation.

Bad kinds of pressure would either be from parents wanting their child to be doing 7 hours of study a night and get into ridiculous courses that the child *thinks* may be waaaay out of their reach. Pressure also comes from not being organised and not having assignments, work etc done in time. These kinds of pressure lead to stress and burning out. Something which you should try to aviod at all costs.

I pressure myself enough already, and my parents pressure me heaps because my sister is so brilliant and did so well in her HSC, I'm pretty sick of living in her shadow so I plan to work hard to eliminate that.
