It matters when calculating equilibrium constant, and when the question doesnt give us the equation
Also for other equations as well, how do we know which equation to use?

Use the first one.....However, it really shouldn't effect any result.

I would use the first one if not provided. The would mark correct for both on an equilibrium expression, but obviously there 2 different answers would result
