I'm doing it at Chatswood. But we're not supposed to be sharing answers I believe.
Do you go to Bondi or Chatswood?
If Chatswood, which class are you going to?

Shouldn't there be like a workshop for you guys if you need to ask questions? or phone number where you can call to get hint with homework.

There are only 2 solutions to the quadratic, because a and b (from a+ib) must be real.

Yeah, there's a workshop every week, but they don't start till after the second or third lesson.

So the question doesnt have to state if a,b are real or not? you just automatically assume its real?

And about the points system, how exactly does getting the distinction question point work? Do you like have to get it right on the first go?

Prior questions are no different to textbook questions in my opinion. It just how they get you to work that is different to other tutors like they make you sign a contract.

First question involves finding z + w given that z = 3+4i and w = 7+i

But for question 7a) Did you rationalise it first? because thats what i did and now i have no idea how to turn it into the answer

and for (iv) and (v) how are we suppose to find the argument?????

EDIT: Ok so for the homework, I currently have problems with:
7a) and finding the argument
8b(i), have no idea how to get rid of the denominator
last distinction question.

I got out the first distinction question, it was fairly simple

The question assumes you know that a and b in the complex number a+ib is real.

I think you need to get at least one distinction right or even both to get the extra 1 point. The points count towards your reward status, which is the annual party at the end of the year to celebrate the results achieved. You need to get 90% or more of the total possible number pointst that you can get with the subjects that you're doing at Prior (5 each week per subject).

I'm up to 7 a) at the moment in the homework. :karate:

Hint:

Do not realise the denominator at all!

Another hint:

Use trig identities, double-angle formulae and clever factorising to simplify the top and bottom.

You only needed to get two entire questions correct for each homework to get the point for the distinction question and it doesn't have to be correct first time, or it was that way last time I checked. If you want to get a reward at the end of the year, you'll probably need to do all of the distinction questions (last year was a PSP and Ipod mini year before). You should easily get +90% expecially if you're a 4u student just through hard work.

Personally I reckon they've made the system a little too easy to get the points considering when I first started at Prior, you had to get all the distinction, or optional questions (as they were called back in my day :p) questions to get a point which had no reward besides knowing that you could do it and perhaps improving your maths skill/knowledge.

This year, the rules have been bended: to qualify for the prize at the end of year celebration, you need to do ALL the distinction questions and get them right!

Well, that was the case for the previous years unless you mean the cruise as the prize. Otherwise, you would hav basically tonnes of people getting a $400 item. Its not that hard if you're willing to put in some work which you should if you plan on doing well in MX2.

Yeah, I meant the cruise. :shy:

It was that tough back then? I thought it was a newly introduced rule, or it was much easier to get prizes a couple of years back.

It was tougher and there was less incentive back then but if you need to do all of the distinctions to go on the cruise, then I guess that the boat might be pretty empty this year...

Sorry but I said the wrong thing about qualifying for the cruise - it's still 90%+ of points to go on the cruise, but the prize at the cruise will be harder to get (all distinction questions attempted and correct).
