Molecular oscillators(black bodies) are important for the world of Quantum Physics and Max Plank and E=nHf

Furthermore, the UV catastrophe and the expectations of a linear relationship of molecular oscillators (when heated) was assumed until the experiments showed strange anomalies.

Physicists thought most of the big questions had been solved. Thermodynamics, including black bodies, were the one thing that they thought still needed to be explained.

Pity they were wrong and the solutions made more questions

In terms of a historical context, physicists at that stage had achieved to:

Understand mechanics and the conservation principle
Had come up with the links between electricity and magnetism. This was due to Maxwell's equations
And had come up with the three laws of thermodynamics.

Despite this, there were several outstanding situations which classical physicists had not come to understand; certain thermal properties of matter. In trying to come up with a solution to these thermal properties, physicists started experimenting with black bodies - bodies with no preference to any particular wavelengths. (As a side note, the colour of an object is not governed by the temperature, but rather the internal structure of the object, and hence physicists needed a black body in which they could apply scientifically sound methods)

One such attempt is seen with Rayleigh Jean's Law. It was Einstein who applied the (Max Planck's) idea of quantisation to black bodies...but it was Debye who actually correctly applied the idea.

This marks the beginning of quantum physics from the perspective that waves can be seen to have particle like properties. Also note that thermal energy is a form of em waves (infra red).
