Windows 10

So who got the Windows 10 Technical Preview that Microsoft released today? Build number is 9841.

Start button is back.

I installed it today and here are a couple of other less obvious things I found about it:

1. netplwiz still works if you want to disable the login screen.

2. god mode still works.

More details:

Netplwiz

The way to disable the login screen is to search for netplwiz, select the username, untick the box on "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer", click Apply, enter and confirm password in the popup, and then click OK.

Alternatively, you can run netplwiz though by either:

- manually finding and double clicking it in the folder C:\Windows\System32

- or from the start button, click all apps, scroll down to and click windows system, scroll down and click run, and in the popup, type netplwiz and click OK.

Now upon restarting, it will take you straight to the desktop without need to login.

Of course if you ever need to get the login back, just run netplwiz again and tick the box you previously unticked.

God Mode

God Mode still works in Windows 10. It's like a control panel on steroids accessible from the desktop.

To make one, make a new folder on the desktop called New Folder.

Now copy this code:

GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

and replace the name of the folder with that name. When you press enter, the folder icon changes to a control panel icon, and the name automatically changes again to just GodMode.

Double click it and you will get a lot of easily accessible controls on your system.

Tried it on a VM at work and thought it looked like a mishmash of Windows 7 and 8. Didn't really explore much but looked more appealing to me than Windows 8 did.

A second preview is available now. It has build number 9860. I would back up 9841 if I were you. 9860 seems to have more problems than 9841. If functionality is severely reduced, you can downgrade back to 9841 if you want - but only if you have a backup!

I've tried out 3 more builds now: 9879, 9888 and 9901.

9879 and 9888 seem OK but 9901 is very buggy.

All the technical previews for windows 10 are free. But it is not yet known if the final version will be a free upgrade.

Wasn't Win8 final version of technical preview free?

What are your thoughts on the UI? I thought it was a solid move to disable the start screen to a smaller start menu, much more functional that way since I never use the start screen.

Well I really don't like what they are doing with the latest build 9901. The control panel is gone! I haven't tried god mode for that build. It is too buggy too.

Microsoft just announced that the windows 10 upgrade will be free for the first year for windows 8.1 and 7.

There are going to be two browsers, Spartan and Internet Explorer. It is understood that IE is only going to be there for backward compatibility. The intention is that Spartan will eventually replace IE.

You will be able to play xbox games on a windows 10 pc.

They also made a new device to work with windows 10 called Microsoft Surface Hub, which is like an interactive whiteboard.

They also have their own new version of augmented reality via a headset called microsoft hololens and a windows environment called windows holographic. This can run on all types of windows 10 screens - but even without any screen. They even invented a new type of processor for it, called an hpu (holographic processing unit). You can use HoloStudio to create your own hologram, but also 3d-print them too.

A new build is apparently going to be available next week.

It's up to build 10049 now and Spartan is now the default browser instead of Internet Explorer.

It's up to build 10061 now. It looks a bit different and Spartan is still there but is hidden. I had to pin it to taskbar manually which was not necessary in previous build.

It's up to build 10074 now.

Project Spartan is going to be renamed to Microsoft Edge.

In fact the whole system name has changed from "windows 10 technical preview" to "windows 10 insider preview".

It comes in 32 bit and 64 bit for most pcs. But there is now also a somewhat smaller new version specifically made for the Raspberry Pi 2.
