I plan to start to work ahead in maths and possibly biology.

I was wondering how you spend your class time within that subject if you are ahead eg. use it as revison or doing your own thing

By all means work ahead, however do not be complacent in class. Still DO the work set and LISTEN to your teacher. It is one thing to know your content before the rest of your peers, but it is another to know it WELL. Before learning ahead in the glorious art of Mathematics and Biology, I recommend you brush up on any concepts you do not understand or struggle with. If you learn ahead and not listen to your teacher, there will surely be a concept or different methods of doing one particular question that you have missed. But overall the benefits of learning ahead is massive.

We use MIF in class, my plan was to do the MIF questions and look over Mathsonline first because they are the easiest of the resources i have access to and then move onto either Fitzpatrick or Cambridge depending on how much work I feel I need on the concept.

The MIF 2 unit book isn't enough so it's a good idea to move onto Fitz or Cambridge as those have harder questions. Even the 3U MIF book may help. A friend of mine dropped ext 1 and said that MIF 2U has much easier exercises.

Do you have the first or second edition of MIF?

because my maths class is absolutely, terribly slow and daunting i work ahead on the topic that is studied. i bring my own textbooks in and ask the teacher if i have problems. i think working ahead in maths is a must. therefore, when you've already learnt a certain section of the book before class, you will be reinforcing your knowledge.

I use the .pdf of the 3unit extention (2nd edition). My school has both 2 unit and 3 unit 1st edition textbooks. In class we just get photocopies of the 2unit textbook (2nd edition). The yellow New Senior Mathematics Fitzpatrick book. PDF of Cambridge (school doesn't have any hard copies ) I have both Prelim and HSC 2nd edition PDF's.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I'm going to put in a bigger effort to get ahead the weekend after the mid-corse exams at this stage im only 1 or 2 maths lessons ahead just so i could revist my best friend surds, we started out in a love-hate relationship but now we are best buddies

How strong are you with your preceding topics?

Last year i was in the "gifted and talented class" and came in 23/29 with about 75% (considering im not at a selective school maths is REALLY competitive but the "top" students would ask for extra time to finiah a test but the "bottom" students never would get any extra time offered to them, so the top students would finish the last 20 marks off at lunch to get 100% and the bottom students would rush the last 20 marks thinking "Oh no got only 10-15 min to go" and then get 70-80% because they did it within the 1 hour allocated.

This year:

Relearnt all the algebra and surds topic because some personal stuff happend and i kind of didnt try, fell behind and then just passed the test.

Geometry - nailed the test all but a similar triangle question (dam you misleading diagram) and finding an angle size (i didnt use corresponding sides in congruent triangles) so i think i got about 32/40 which was 3rd in 2unit class and about 20th overall and the few algebra questions that where in the test i got them all right.

Trig - havent had a topic test yet but i remember it all from last year and seem to be one of a few in the 2 unit class that get sin Θ = cos (90 - Θ), cos Θ = sin(90 - Θ).

My next door neighbour offered to help me go ahead in maths (he is a math teacher) and my maths teacher seems open to the idea of me working ahead and getting help off him aswell.

I'll most likely end up following the school program which goes: functions and graphs, linear functions (test), intorduction to calculus (test) and the quadratic functon and locus (yearly exam).

To me that seems like a reasonable order to do everything, any suggestions on the order of doing topics.

I recommend you learn Loci and especially Quadratic Function first before Calculus. I found it easier to understand. But that's just me. There are some brilliant exercise questions in the Cambridge book for these topics so be sure to check them out.

Definitely do it, it is what they tell you to do in University and you get a huge advantage over the rest of the class.

Is there a link i can go to and download the fitzpatrick 2U textbook in .pdf format ?because my cousin was using mine for his HSC test and im too lazy to go get it off him.
