When you already have a prepared essay with techniques and all that. Do you need to change the techniques to suit the question? or just add a reinforcing sentence that links to the essay question?

Definitely only use techniques that are relevant to the question. Adding a linking sentence at the end of each paragraph does not help your cause as the markers can tell the techniques do not support your answer to the question.

Depends how good you are. If you can argue and change the way you analysed the technique to suit the question, go for it.

But if you're mediocre and can't think on the spot to save your ass, make sure you memorised enough techniques to shove in.

To be honest though, the technique + analysis is useless if it doesn't prove your point of view, so if you just "add a reinforcing sentence that links to the essay question" where it's inappropriate, I would think you'd want a change of technique, example, effect.

I find that once you have praticed enough, all techniques in some way will link to the thesis very well, which would be explicit to the question.
you may need to retool a few words here and there, and the intro/concluding statements and paragraphs, but it should be ok unless the question is extremely annoying
