In actuality, Dentistry at Melbourne University is harder to get in than Medicine. Just because there are less positions available.
About 60-70 students are accepted into Dentistry and about 200 into Medicine.

I have 4 friends studying at Melbourne Dentistry, two was offered FULL FEE Dentistry at 99.65-99.75 ENTER and a very very decent UMAT (270/300 before Melbourne University's weird scaling takes place).

Medicine tends to be around that ENTER as well for Melbourne University, however, 99.65 should be able to get you a CSP place with a 270 umat.

Moving along now. Prior to 2008 Dentistry was harder to get in. However, with the introduction of La Trobe's Dentistry course, the enter dropped dramatically with a first round offer of only 98.85 with no umat required. Much of this reduction was attributed by many factors such as the location of the university in a rural area, the lack of publicity and knowledge about the existence of the course etc.

Then again, one could argue that many students with 95-97 UAI landed a place with UTAS or JCU Med.
of course there are a variety of unis out there for both med and ddentistry and there is no universal 'bar' that sets entry requirements for med against dentistry (if you compare say, UNSW med and La Trobe dentistry, or Umelb dentistry and JCU med - obviously there are exceptions. generally these 2 courses and both in high demand, perhaps medicine more so than dentistry but on the other end of the scale there are a lot more places available for med (especially wth the shortage of GPs as they near retirement age) whereas dentistry (like optometry) remains highly regulated and a niche field.

The minimum requirements are cut offs to be considered. 90 is no clear indication just as Melbourne's "minimum" 97 medicine, 95% of offers are still high 99.6+.

As for the Masters, please look outside the box.
The application for specialist training or Ph. Ds are very competitive. The fact that you have a masters will give you an edge.

I specifically mentioned international because they WILL value a masters degree over a bachelors.
Just bear in mind that you will be paying DFEE for the master's, that means forking out almost 100K for the last 2years and not everyone has that kind of money.

Also dentistry is highly in demand so having a master's degree isnt all that useful unless your planning to specialise becoming an orthodontist etc but the acceptance rate for specialisng is very low, your pretty much gonna have to come at the top of your cohort to have any chance at all.

When I mentioned FREE masters, I meant free :)
We do not pay for the Masters Degree is is covered by CSP.

hmm, i guess the DFEE must've applied for griffith then seeing as they also include master's in their dent course.

Would you know what the requirements for transfer? UMAT required?

UMAT is not taken into account.
From what I've heard, they have not considered anything less than top grades over your 1st year to transfer.

Pharmacy students successfully transferred, all were straight HD1 (As) across all subjects.
I have a close friend (who could have gone into dentistry first round but instead placed Law/Com as 1st pref), who was denied transfer because he had 1 "B" in his average for one subject.

Perfect grades to transfer.
However, I don't know about Dentistry into Dentistry transfers. I would assume they would be less strict about the "perfect" average rule.

Best of luck if you are planning to save yourself 100k =D

What's your UAI (ENTER)?

I can't believe it, it may be a mistake, the FRINGE enter for la trobe dentistry this year is 94.6 (as stated on VTAC).

It was 98.55 fringe last year, I can't see how it dropped 4 ENTER!
I mean, let's think about it logically.

Last year:
Undergraduate positions available-
Medicine: Melbourne 200, Monash 200 (approxs)
Dentistry: Melbourne 70, La Trobe 55
A total of: 515 (approx).
Melbourne Uni has cut off its undergrad med course. Meaning there are now only a meer 300-ish positions in VIC for Med/Dent, yet the fringe enter for Dent at la trobe dropped 4 ENTERs.

Anyone else think it's a mistake on VTAC or is there another reasonable explanation?

Curious Delton, what was your ENTER? You might get in Dentistry without having to complete/study in another course.

I don't give a shit if you doubt it, the entry requirement for Denistry at CSU in 2008 was 90. I know this because;
- I go to CSU
- I know people who applied for it
- My old boss was on the interview panel

I'm sure it will go up as demand grows the UAI requirement will grow, but I doubt it'll ever reach 99. CSU is trying to keep the degree attainable for rural students. Not many rural students get 99.

this guy is right.

IF you are rural u can get an interview with GPA of only around 4.5!!! yes i know too.

destistry at csu is to address the rural shortage. they dont care about uai cut-off because the cut-off will never be published anyway.

hence the reason for the interview, they want to know that you are dedicated to pracitce in a rural area.

they may accpet a few OUTSTANDING non-rural students a year, meaning for those the uai may be around 99+

if the uni dont churn out graduates to address the dental shortage then their funding could be cut.

my uai was 94+, but i know there's no way i can get in atm with that score.
I guess i might have to look at other alternatives as well such as adelaide uni and griffith.

Adelaide Med or Dent is harder to get into than La Trobe or CSU.

I thought adelaide required a minumum of 90.

Which do you think i have the best chance gettin into?

and what do you think of UWA, though i heard that they kick ppl out if you fail.

I wouldn't care less if a university quoted the minimum UAI/ENTER into Medicine or Dentistry was 60.00! It is NOT an accurate score.
About 1,000 students apply for Dentistry, 700 of those students lie above "90" with only 50 places offered. Meaning, most would be the 98+ range.

If you are transferring, just like High school, you should apply to ALL universities. It'll only increase your chances.

BEST OF LUCK! =)

Your vulgar use of language is disgusts me. I never thought such an intellectual place would harbour people such as yourself.

Clearly, you were from a rural area to be offered a place with 90?

My cousin got into dentistry with a uai of 87...he didnt even do chem for hsc.
