Chemistry SSP and adv streams only differ in the labs, and chem SSP has awesome labs. I had so much fun in those. Only chem SSP students get to participate in the SYDONA project (joint effort of USYD and U Arizona) - you get this complicated recipe to make a mysterious coordinated compound over 2-3 weeks and then you spend the next 6-7 weeks carrying out a huge variety of experiments to figure out what you've created and its chemical formula/structure. Definitely do it.

I don't think there's any requirement on the number of advanced units that you have to do in 1st year. But to stay in the advanced stream in 2nd/3rd year, at least half of your units have to be advanced (so 24cp in one year). The load in 1st year is actually pretty light even on all advanced units so I do think it'll be a good idea to do at least 24cp of advanced units in 1st year to get a feel for it and get into a good study habit. If you're thinking about doing HPSC1901 then have a look at the difference between the two - sometimes it's only a matter of a few extra seminars which you'll be asked a question or two about in the final exam, other times it can actually mean a lot of extra work. So have a think about which other subject apart from chemistry you're more insterested in. That's probably the best one to do at advanced level.

thanks! i think i will end up changing the bioethics to bioethics advanced coz it says the material is explored in greater depth IN A SEPERATE TUTORIAL...so i suppose i just go to an extra tute a week and get more work...
that chem ssp sounds amazing im so excited for it! just dont really like group work but i know thats like half the point of it so ill just have to get used to it.
there rnt really any other subs i can change to advanced coz i didnt do ext 2 maths and i dont feel comfortable enrolling in a sub where i dont meet the assumed knowledge...also, i didnt do bio for HSC so i dont wanna do concepts in biology (adv) - the general stream says no previous bio knowledge is required...so there u go
also the astronomy subject dusnt have an advanced version and there is no way im dropping that...sounds awesome

thanks for the advice neways :)

That's fair enough. Plus if you do well in normal level maths in semester 1, you can always change to advanced level next semester (I think you need credit or better).

Remember to come to the science transition workshop!

such a shit subject. diarmuid's a bit better than he was in geopol, though.
Really? Ugh. Ah well, not like it matters, gotta do it if i wanna end up doin govt honours.

So does anyone know what the key differences are between GOVT2991 Government 2 Honours (Policy Analysis) and GOVT2552 Policy Analysis?

2991 is actually 'political analysis' iirc. it's really just a mishmash of theoretical issues and approaches (behaviouralism, rational choice theory, institutionalism, structure vs agency, etc) which is sort of interesting but the way the whole thing is presented is pretty dull and it's not particularly well taught. it's a bit smaller than the average GOVT subject though, which is a positive.

honours was the only reason i did it as well, same with 3993 and 3994 this year. honours qualification for GOVT is completely over the top, although the arts faculty will probably force them to change it sometime.

Hello, bludge semester woo.

I thought you had to do 24cp of 3rd year subjects before work experience could be counted?

haha nah not totally true...technically you have to, but i think you can 'claim' the time spent now once you have 24cp done...they're pretty lenient with it anyway. Besides, it's worth 0cp anyway.
4702 site says they can grant it for third year too. im just witing for that dude to reply.

my ultra stupendous plan was to do cross institutional study (evening classes) at mq uni - get some comp courses out of the way, but it was too crazy

Is the science transition workshop really worth attending?
I think so. I attended last year and made lots of new friends who are doing the same subjects and share lectures/labs/tutorials with me. The students are divided into small groups of 6-8 depending on their nominated area of interest. There are lots of fun activities and it's a great opportunity to socialise and get to know the other 1st year science students - you don't really get many chance to do that later on. It's always an advantage to be able to turn up on your first day at uni and know that you'll see some friendly and familiar faces, especially if you feel a bit nervous this new and exciting environment. I had such a great experience there last year that I'm volunteering to help out at the workshop this year.

Well, that sounds.. dull. I liked Dairmuid in geopol though, so it might turn out alright.

So what's the general consensus on the other prerequisite units for govt honours? Are they supposed to be alright, 'cause that one about power looks pretty interesting..

That looks really good aye, it should be a good one. I wonder how popular it would be though? Im sure most people would be happy to do this unit

Hopefully not too popular, I don't really like big lecture classes. I don't think many history students know they can take a Jewish class and have it count as a history class.

Heh, true. But then I hate being in small lecture theatres as well =/. SHould work out fine though, as long as the content is fun
