Nelson quitting politics | smh.com.au

Former defence minister and opposition leader Brendan Nelson has quit politics, Liberal sources confirmed to AAP on Monday evening.

I could've sworn Lentern was onto something when he said Nelson could still be elected PM! I wonder if he could possibly be wrong too on his claim that Smith will be next Labor leader?!

Unfortunate, I think he still could've contributed something to cabinet, had the Libs taken government again within 5 years.

Brendan Nelson was always a weak character, as was former Premier Morris Iemma.

He could well have done had the timing been right, as could Smith. if John Howard could come back from where he was in 1990 to be the longest serving prime minister since Menzies Nelson had every chance. As for Smith, I don't think he will be prime minister but had he come to the leadership anytime between 2002 and 2007 he could have won a federal election without much difficulty. But without really showing any criteria you were able to just flick off Nelson as "not prime minister material."

Senator Minchin should run in the by-election. Downer, Howard, Nelson gone, Costello might not go for it, the dry libs if they want to take back control in the house look like they might be forced to choose between Tony Abbott and Bronwyn Bishop the way things are going.

Thank god, another wanker gone from the liberals! YAY!! Ive always thought of nelson as a weakling and a dick, especially after he tried to bring in higher uni fees

Saying that, i am not like a political supporter, i just think that the liberals were rulling for like ages and yet what did they do...not much...oh yeah went against their lies of 'gst wont be introduced' bull..... like that

What? He brought in VSU which reduced the upfront costs of attending university by $600 a year.

Howard said he wouldn't bring in a GST. He then changed his mind, indicated as such, but waited until after the next election to implement it. The 1998 election was fought on the GST and the people voted in favour of it.

From my encounters with Nelson he seems very genuine, certainly moreso than his replacement.

I still don't get why people still hark on about the evils of GST. Either you don't understand it, or you're an idiot. Or both.

He didn't lie when he decided to reintroduce it.

lol @ what did they do, ffs.

How did the people vote in favour of it when a majority of them voted for Beazley?
