I work as a receptionist at a Doctor's surgery and I do the billing and close their batches - translation: i add up the amount they make and send and recieve it via Medicare. We have 4 doctors there, and on average they make about $1200 a day - and they don't specialise in anything. GP's are paid per patient, and it's usually $33.15 per patient plus an additional 15.60 for those under 16 and those over 55. Saturday's (after 1pm) and Sunday's the average is raised to $48.60. Don't forget to also factor in Worker's Compensation and Veteran's affairs patients. We have one doctor there who does not see many patients at all (he's a jerk) and the lowest he has ever been paid is $860 for a full day.

All in all, I would say that doctors are paid pretty well. Although the hours are pretty crap. Hope that helped some.

tbh, radiologists in my opinion get paid very well. I've also never met a radiologist who isn't a jackass.

yup, don't become a doc if you want the money. there are easier ways
(some plumbers make heaps of $$$ for similar times, etc)

there was also an article somewhere where a fedex courier would make more money than a doc for the first 20 years or so

Lolz at "he's a jerk". I worked at Penrith Medical Centre for about 3 months, PT. I remember one of the head nurses pointed at the screen which showed $311.000... Don't know what it was for but I'll guess and say it was money contributed from the 3 doctors who jointly own the practice to cover the costs of supplies, insurance etc... Those doctors are made of stone; they put up with a lot of abuse from patients, which IMO wasn't necessary.

No doubt it's good money but remember that one error could cost you everything.

Now that you know, apply to Physiotherapy instead. jkzmHmm

My mother is a G.P and she earns around 110K after tax, so I won't say that they earn a lot, but it is quite a bit and there is always work. The reason medicine is so hard to get into is because many people want to get in to help people and for the prestige, I even know some people who just want to see if they get in for fun. There is more money is in the financial sector and the work is less intensive + less hard to get into + less time at uni.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh

$110k sounds about right. Location can determine the salary I suppose. You wouldn't expect to earn as much a city doctor if you are a rural doctor, but hey, GP's are springing up all over the place. In 2008 alone 4 new GP's opened in my area.

Too many GPs = :(

An increase in GPs will hopefully mean cheaper, more accessible healthcare. Surely this should be a good thing for population health and cause for a smile.

Of course but consider the GP's, wouldn't a sudden influx cause problems for some GP's? For example, the number of patients? People have choice but too many GP's could have the same affect as having too many IT's. Hmz didn't consider the fact that the specialty has a limited number of places per year for those wanting to become a GP... I'm outa my depth again

Funnily enough, you earn more as a rural doctor than a city doctor. As a rural doctor, there is less competition because most doctors can afford to live in the city (and most are more attracted to the city due to their higher level of education, and their probable life in the city while at uni) so they can charge more per patient and never go for a day short on patients. Unlike for things where in the city you earn more than rural (e.g. financial or legal services), people must visit a doctor nearby, you cannot simply communicate with a doctor via correspondence or go for a visit one day with a 2 hour drive to the city.

Believe me, doctors in rural areas are raking in cash. A Canberra doctor can earn twice as much as a Sydney doctor with the same work and hours. Of course, I am speaking of private practice, but public hospitals also pay more to attract doctors to the greater shortage in rural areas.

Just also remember for most of your doctor specialities your insurance is going to be through the roof, I was talking to an anthesist who said her yearly insurance rate was something like $150k.

Oh, crack that idea. When registering it states that only registered medical practioners may take part in the forums. No general public.

I'm guessing she has had to lodge a couple of unruly claims + exagerated....

No words I can type would change anyones views in this post, as my future doctor(s) though could you please lose the frustrated, angry keyboard jocky part of your personality.
I'm going to go way off track here, but an exercise I like to do is view myself for a day from the perspective of an independant 3rd person observer. Then ask how would this observer describe me by the end of the day? Would they want to become my mate? become bored after watching me for 2 hours and wish the day would end? run away in fear? or look a way in digust...
