dell laptops are quite good value for money. Desktops dell are terrible.

Apart from Dell, I'd go for either Toshiba or ASUS.
Whatever you do don't get a hp or Compaq.

penta, in ultimo, but theyre run by dodgy paki's, so dont go there.

stick with jb hifi, or keep a lookout for myer's electrical sales, they normally sell laptops in a package, eg laptop with bag, mouse, ms office 07, etc.

I really like the online stores like Amazon and ebay. Sometimes you get really cheap offers and most important, you'll get all the information you need about specifications and features. You can also check out netbook reviews before to see what others think about certain models. I also like Dell - I always wanted to configure a laptop according to my individual needs, maybe I'll get one some day.

Joyce Mayne of JB Hi Fi are pretty good. Dont go to Harvey Norman.

As for the laptop, Toshiba, Asus or MSI are generally pretty good. Go to a store with a sale on to get best value cause computers often get a fair price cut.

At least with a big department store, you can dramatically reduce the original price.

I have heard mixed responses for dell laptops, I had a friend who had their hard drive die twice on them and the customer support is horrible.

My advice is don't go for those electronic store chains, they are a huge rip off( and for chumps), you're better off getting a laptop from sites like amazon or if you must go retail go to your local computer store( although sometimes they can be a rip off as well) or go to your trusty msy store.

Firstly... and this is my anti-Mac rant... just warning.

Macs are good at a very few specific tasks. They work for anyone and work easily without hassle, they have reasonable life, good support and good battery life.

They DO NOT: have up to date parts... graphics card a few years and processors about 9 months behind the trend.

They DO NOT: have better battery life, there are computers with much better battery life out there.

They cannot run any decent games or graphics editing, particularly graphics editing... YES I did just say that.

They DO NOT have an immunity to viruses whatsoever.

They ARE more expensive.

They ARE more fragile.

If you want to do more than the set tasks that a Mac is designed to do it's a ridiculously fiddly process...

I've had two Toshiba Laptops... both with amazing Battery life... amazing quality to cost ratio and awesome support. When my HDD died because It was faulty I got it back in 3 and a half days when I lived on the South Coast. They sent a courier to pick it up.

Windows 7 makes life just as easy as a Mac does. And yea...

In terms of buying Laptops... try officeworks. They do good prices... and you can get an extended Warranty (which you should always do)
