A POLICE officer has been shot dead while on patrol in Northern Ireland, two days after the fatal shooting of two British soldiers.

The officer was shot in the head in Craigavon in County Armagh following the death of two British soldiers at the Massereene Barracks in Antrim, northwest of Belfast, which has raised fears for the stability of the peace process.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed one of its officers had been shot dead in an ambush in the town southwest of Belfast, The Associated Press (AP) reported.
The officer was on a callout to Lismore Manor, a republican area of Craigavon, when the attack took place as he and a colleague were sitting in a car, local political sources said.
The shooting of the soldiers at the Massereene Barracks on Sunday was the first of its kind in 12 years.
Peace has largely returned to Northern Ireland, plagued by decades of sectarian violence which killed thousands of people, since a peace accord in 1998.



But the latest upsurge of violence has prompted fears of a step-change towards instability and has prompted politicians to insist that Northern Ireland's devolved power-sharing government will not be derailed.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said today on a visit to Northern Ireland that the peace process was "unshakeable".

Dont really know much about the situation in Ireland because its not full of muslims etc and they stopped fighting in 1998. Why are they starting again?

New generation of radicals.
Previous generation got tired of war and, like all people, became more conservative with age.
This generation is still young and knows very little about the hardships and strife that their parents were involved in. So of course they think it'll be a great idea to start an uprising again.

Technically they're still divided upon religious grounds, but none of them are actually fighting in the name of their god, nor is there any evidence of a willingness for self-sacrifice in His name. Nowadays it's just a crazed nationalistic movement, or a tit-for-tat response to previous attacks, such that no-one actually remembers what the original cause was.
