My subject selection is in early July (yes it's a long way away). I want to know what is involved in the subjects:
Economics
Biology
Modern History
Physics
Chemistry

I'm undecided on the first three subjects and I'd like to know what is involved. I'm doing 13 units in preliminary and dropping a subject and doing Ext 2 Math.

Visit each subject forum.

It talks about each course quite well.

Alternatively, you may choose visit www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au for syllabi. You may have a good read on that because it incorporates a whole range of topics (e.g. topics, time allocation, and random stuff)

Generally your school will give you an outline of the courses. You could also talk to some students from year 11 and 12 about what they think of the courses at your school

well in economics you learn about the economy, thing such as inflation, unemployment, economic growth and things like that. it is an interesting course because once you understand it, you understand most of what is going on with the economy, for example, you will learn the economic theory behind why it is good for the government to spend money like crazy when the economy is doing badly, such as right now. you learn other stuff to about the value of the dollar and how that affects the economy as well as prices of products and just a bunch of stuff like that. even if you dont intend to follow economics through into university (which i didnt, im doing science) it is still an good subject as it helps you better understand whats going on in the world.

im assuming that modern history is like ancient history. you learn about a person, then a historic event, then a historic period of time and stuff like that. 4 topics each year. the choice about what you do is extremely varied if you check out the syllabus, but your school will probably only teach you certain subjects so it is best to ask your history co ordinator to see if you will like the topic areas being taught. BoS wont be a great deal of help on this one

and I did chem. its pretty good. somewhat interesting if you like science, which you seem to. you learn about chemical reactions and equations and such. in prelim you learn about metals, energy, water and one other topic. this is one where i would say a teacher can really influence how interesting the subject is. a good teacher can make it good, and bad teacher can make it terrible

ok well out of all of them i only do biology.
i would recommend it.
the prelim course is a bit dry. i didnt like it at all & was seriously considering dropping but the HSC course is much much better.

like the person above, i only do bio.

we're learning about cells right now, plant cells, photosynthesis etc.
i like it, but i could be biased coz i have a really good teacher.

my friends doing modern history like it.. but for the hsc you apparently have to write like, three essays in four hours or something? so that's a bit unpleasant. they learnt about JFK assassination.

You should check out syllabus of each subject, you can find them at the boardofstudies site. They give a good overview of what you will be studying.

If you're undecided about the first three subjects, well, if you do bio, i hear the sciences overlap alot so it may make studying an easier job for you however a mix of different areas isn't a bad choice. I chose phys, chem and eco to keep my options open.
