It might be too late to drop it now.
Topics are abit different, you missed the yr 11 and 2 terms of yr 12 work.

But...they might give you the average marks for those two tests, if they allow you to drop.
Just ask your teacher.

When I dropped from 2U to general, they made my overall mark based simply on the prelim final exam. That said, though, I don't know if there is any way they will let you drop to general this far into your HSC.

For your information guys, you don't "drop" to general maths, as general maths is a completely differnet form of maths compared to 2U. ;)

i dont think its too late, last time the teacher spoke (last week) to the class he said its better the sooner you do it.. he said he would talk to us about dropping anyway. So i would get like an average of those assessment marks or an estimate?

Though arguably, it could still be refferred to as "dropping" seeing as you're dropping 2U to pick up general, no?
As well as this the fact that it is an 'easier' course than 2U means that it is, in a sense, dropping to a lower level of mathematical education.
So, imo, yes you can 'drop to general'

Lol, getting an average in general can't be better then what you're going to get in mathematics; unless you really suck :bomb:

well no. getting an average in general will not scale better than slightly lower than average in 2 unit maths. you only want to drop if you really really have no idea in 2 unit maths and cant improve easily.

As has been alluded to variously, General is not a subset or an easier version of 2U. Unless u cannot survive 2U, don't switch to General. Its syllabus is different and even tho its maths content is light, it is difficult in its own way. You'd also have missed Prelim General. I've tutored General and I dread doing it.

Is there a teacher on the planet who actually likes teaching or tutoring General Maths?

Because it is so painful to see these students struggling with mathematically simple problems; not because I despise them. I feel so helpless not to be able to do better.

Yeah i tutored someone in general maths while I was doing it myself.

She was fairly good (averaging around 70% before I started tutoring her) and by the time trials came she got high 80s and ended up getting a 90 in the HSC) so it wasn't a drag tutoring her, and the fact that she visibly grasped the content 'better' when I helped her made me go :)

Overall my experience of tutoring general maths content was positive. Though i would imagine it would be quite annoying with a student who really struggled/didn't put the effort in.

I think the problem with general is not that the maths is too simple, it is that too much of it can only be presented in a "black box" kind of way (e.g., Simpson's Rule with no calculus.) And they do harder probability than the 2 Unit students!

Also, I am not sure how useful the course is to the people who learn it. I think the technology aspect of it could be done a lot better, and much closer to what people will do in real life, if we dropped those stupid graphics calculators and used spread sheets much more.

And the literacy problems with the course... Well, they are another story.

(Our school didn't teach us the graphic calculator module and taught us spreadsheets instead, actually. It was a far better approach imo).
