Urinating require the memory of how to do so, but it would be awkward to say urinating is "just a memory game".

not all of it - especially maths, its all about understanding and applying
but other subjects such as the humanities are pretty much all memorisation, even the sciences to an extent are a lot of memorisation

Yes i agree that alot of the Hsc course in most subjects such as eco, phys , history require a lot of memorising. However memorising will only get you so far, there are questions that test your understanding, so if you only memorise and don't understand it, your stuffed.

No it's a mixture of both.

If you can memorise everything but can't apply your knowledge then there's no point.
If you can apply concepts but you don't know what the content is, you're pretty much screwed.

Even humanities do involve memorisation but you do need to know to apply/analyse. For eg in modern, you could know the entire syllabus but you won't be able to get high marks unless you can actually answer the essay question.... you don't really need to remember anything for the comprehension and analysing sources section XD

yeah, its just memory,
even for maths.
It would be pretty hard just to memorise stuff and not understand it though, so i like to think that if you can memorise more you are definitely at an advantage to someone who memorises less.

Let's get technical here.
The title says 'Is the HSC just a "memory game"?'

Those of you who are saying 'yes' are essentially saying that you need no other skills to ace the HSC.
Those of you who are saying 'it's partially memory, partially other skills' are disagreeing with the title, that the HSC is just a memory game.
Anyone that said the above should be voting No.

There's no 'partially' agreeing or disagreeing to this question. You either agree that it's just a memory game or not.

What you have created is a topic that cannot be debated. If you want to make people choose between memory being the only skill, or if other skills are needed, then you have made this poll redundant. Obviously you need some other skills to ace the HSC. Even if it is just the ability to write, or at the very least dictate what you want written. That is another skill.

Whether memory is the most important skill to have, or if something else is more important... That is debatable.

/end minor rant :)

Exactly. So unless you think there is no other skill involved in the HSC at all, you should be voting 'no' to the poll.
ie.This poll IS redundant.

i have an ex - uni profeesor for one of my classes. he basically told us he rekons the hsc systems sucks, because at uni, you get "the question" you have to answer for your unit exam at the beginning of the subject unit, and that's what you work toward knowing/ understanding. In the hsc, however, we just get told a bunch of stuff to learn, then we get a random question in exams thet may or may not fit into what we've studied, and how we thought we would anser 'the question'.
I rekon the hsc kinda sucks because of that.
...so it really can't JUST be a "memory game"

Memorizing everything will only get you so far. But most subjects require you to apply your knowledge and to do this you need a thorough understanding of the content. In my opinion the subject that requires the most memory is English, but even then you have to be able to shape your responses to the questions.

of course you need to be able to memorise everything you've learnt
but you need to be able to apply that knowledge to a particular question.
Bio stuffs me up all the time with this
They could ask you to evaluate something, where a lot of people would just describe or discuss. Its those stupid verbs you've gotta watch out for.

Stupid verbs :bomb:

what kind of choice is partially agree/disagree? what a flawed poll

anyway i would disagree mainly because "memorisers" will definitely underperform "understanders" on an empirical level
