If you're going to fail a unit, is thee a difference in the degree of how much you fail? For example, what is the diffeence between getting 3% for the course, and getting 38%? Random numbers.

Such a funny query :music:.
I believe that it's not different at all. Fail is fail.

The only difference is, if you get 3% in a subject it's more difficult to pull your overall average up later... whereas a 38% is less difficult to improve on.
Stating the obvious, yes, but just a thought.

Grade Point Average

The Grade Point Average (GPA) of a student is a calculation, which reflects the overall grades of a student. It is based on units completed at Macquarie University and does not take into account credit points granted for credit for previous studies.
The GPA is printed on all academic records. It is used in academic advising in the following areas: for unit prerequisites, for admission to Bachelor honours programs, for transfer from one degree program to another and for admission to restricted areas of study.
The grade point average (GPA) for grades obtained from 2001 is calculated as follows:
GPA = (4w + 3x + 2y + 1z + 0f) divided by e
w is the number of credit points gained at HD and D x is the number of credit points gained at Cr y is the number of credit points gained at P z is the number of credit points gained at PC e is the total number of credit points for which a student is effectively enrolled (excluding units with W or S) f is the number of credit points gained with an F grade
From this it seems like a fail and an epic fail would have the same effect on your gpa.

EDIT: but this also means a high pass is worth the same as a scraping though pass. Doesn't sound fair to me.

Ah, point taken.
Would percentages appear on transcripts? Or simply Fails?

EDIT: whatashotbyseve's point is true. At least 38 would show some sort of attempt.

Your marks do appear on your transcript. Good luck explaining to employers why you got 3 in a unit.
That's incorrect dude. Let me clarify.

If you fail a unit, the marks are not displayed on the regular transcript. Student administration have records of marks obtained in Failed units, but they aren't available to students. They are recorded in the system so that if you get say, a mark of 49, then course co-ordinators can make a decision as whether to award an additional mark through 're-checking' the exam and Pass the student, although it's entirely up to their discretion.

So no, if you Fail a unit, the mark obtained doesn't appear anywhere.

Everyone else is incorrect. If you get say 38%, your transcript will state 'Fail'; however, if you get a mark like 3%, it will most certainly state 'EPIC FAIL'.

Sometimes it's not really accurate to conclude that a 3% fail would have to try much harder to pass than a 38%, coz I assume that any person having a 3% must not study anything or intentionally failed (coz even u guess u can have a much higher marks), not his/her potential ability. The 38% may be in the same case, of course. But maybe it's his own capability.

My 3 cents :haha:.
