hey ANU-ers,

im doing my HSC this year and have been thinking about degrees lately.
ANU is definatly for me ive decided, and ive had this in my head for a while.

however what i want to do is a harder question.

its between either the BA (Int. relations) or Security analysis (Asia-pacific).

originally i was deadset SEC ANALYSIS all the way however now im not so sure about the whole asian region focus (i feel ill get bored with it/ not really where i want to direct myself).

so i guess what i need is just information on both these degrees and even alternatives that are worth considering. Im deadset on working for ASIO / DFAT or global aid / NGO's etc etc.

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks guys

Jake

I've got friends doing both these degrees, IR being the more common one. The bloke doing Security Analysis is hoping to work at asio etc, and is really enjoying the course. However you need to learn a language, which can be difficult for some.

IR links
ANU - Department of International Relations - IR
ANU - STUDYAT - Bachelor of Arts (International Relations)

Security Analysis
ANU - STUDYAT - Bachelor of Security Analysis (Asia-Pacific)
Bachelor of Security Analysis (Asia-Pacific - Faculty of Asian Studies)

In a way you can do both, in a combined degree. You can do this degree:

"Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Asian Studies (Specialist)"

With your Arts degree have International relations as your major and with your Asian Studies degree have Security Studies as your major.
Here is the link:
ANU - STUDYAT - Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Asian Studies (Specialist)

I do the International Relations degree at ANU but I know some people who are doing it as a combined degree with the Security Studies.

You would still need to do a language.

thanks for those links, naturally ive been to all these places. I dont really get the difference between the degrees but, like what would define the IR degree and the Security analysis degree.

----> i know its cliche and really really popular but im kinda looking more towards europe, probably will learn french so i can use it throughout africa etc.

One of my friends doing it does French as their European language and Arabic as their Asian Language.... Both are very useful.

Both degrees are just specialised arts degrees with no unique courses or electives. Someone doing a B. Arts can do international relations courses and someone doing a B. Asian can do the two specialised securities studies courses (Security and Stategic Studies A and B). Doing either merely restricts your flexibility and flexibility is the best thing about an arts or asian studies degree. I strongly recommend that you enrol in a combined Asian Studies/Arts degree, and if you're really, really keen you can internally transfer to either international relations or securities studies after first year without losing any time.

Oh and PS, as for a career with ASIO, they are the little guys, if you want the big one go for ASIS.
