Ok, so i'm at TAFE doing a diploma course and just recently I got hit with literally 6 full scale bitch assignments all due within 3 weeks. I quite obviously need to commit x amount of hours to these tasks but i'm also lacking the ability to find time to do them because i'm always at work when I have my days of.

Here's how my life is pretty much working out right now.

Monday - TAFE - 9 - 3
Tuesday - Work - 10 - 5
Wednesday - TAFE - 9 - 5
Thursday - Work - 10 - 5
Friday - TAFE - 9 - 5
Sat & Sunday working full days.

I'm always filling in for someone else when that person can't make it to their shift. So i'm not a slack ass when it comes to working.

The reason why i'm telling you this is because just then I called work up asking for a day off tomorrow because i'm actually in need of some time to get a start on these assignments. I've been told 'No, I can't do that' because I was supposed to give at least 2 weeks notice.

That's fine with the notice. But who's to say I knew that in 2 weeks time we'd get these assignments put on us? My time management isn't all that catastrophic either.

Is this unethical for someone to deny my request to complete tasks within the education field?

Dont fill in for others, find someone who will take on your shifts and if worse comes to worse you should know that you are at tafe it may be regarded less favourably than uni but you still work pretty damn hard

i wouldnt call it unethical, most places would ask for 2 weeks notice of an unavailibility for a shift. certainly calling up the day before a shift couldnt be seen to be giving them a lot of notice, maybe if you'd called earlier in the week.

i have found that the most time-management dilemmas such as this can be solved with the prudent rescheduling of nightly sleep to a more suitable juncture.

I'm not saying i've left these assignments to the last minute, they've only been given to me in the last few days, most of which were given today. It's just that I can't really say yeah to every free day I have and work my ass off only to be told that i'm not allowed to give a last minute (18+ hours) notice that I wish to take the day off to complete my studies.

Even they do the last minute bullshit I need you to work tomorrow and I have no choice but to do it.

Stop whining and learn to manage your time.

My work week fluctuates from 40-60+ hours... and I get paid for 37.5 albeit this is very well paid but the fact is I'm not compensated for o/t - it's just part of the job. I'm fulltime at uni so thats 5 contact hours (I don't go to lectures) and about 15-20 hours of study. And throw in an active social life.

Admittedly I have considerable control of my working arrangements and can work from home if I don't have meetings. But you can't escape that in a given week I do 60-85 hours of work and uni on top of having a life. Gotta schedule your time and be disciplined about it. A good skill to learn.

You say you are covering other people's shifts - how about getting them to cover yours?

At uni and tafe you get a subject outline thats supposed to indicate when assignments are due.

But i agree with one of the other posters above. you should've called in sick.

Yeah we do have an outline. But some of which the lecturer just goes yeah let's put this shit in see how they all go. True story.

Most jobs I have worked at have a system where you have to give minimum of a week, or sometimes two weeks, notice if you want a day of. Its not like some kind of credit system where you work other peoples shifts and then gain work credits for yourself so you can take time off.

Sure it sucks being lumped with assignments. Sure work sucks, but they don't really care about each other or mix well. If you need a day of immediately always call in sick because it is unethical for them to make you work if you are unwell. Generally you can not attend for one day without needing a medical certificate. It might sound like lying (which it is) but honesty gets you nowhere is this situation. Everyone does it and everyone has to take up slack at some point because of it buts its the only way to get around this system.

Apply for extensions if you need them, but also be aware that course guides generally lay out when assessments are due, and its coming up to end of semester, so its kind of obvious/expected that this would happen. The ideal thing to do would have been to plan for this and 2 weeks ago took a few days for the future.

Get a calendar.

You also still have from when you get home till when you go to sleep to work on them, during the week. Plus you would have at least a spare few hours each day on the weekends.

You might have to social recluse it for one or two weeks but that's hardly unheard of during peak study times.

I worked on tuesday and felt really sick but when I asked if there was anyone to cover my shifts for thrusday and friday I was told I would have to find them where as I could've called in sick 2 hours before starting on thursday and they would've done it. go figure.

you should've called in sick or found someone else to take your shifts.

also you're probably better off cutting out one of two of your work days...where do you find time to relax, socialise, do tafe work?

From what I've heard, Tafe isn't that hard. I work 6 days a week, and study full time at university and always find time to do my uni assignments when needed.

You finish tafe at 5/6 or whatever, why not do some of your work then?
