I read the Chaser/Quentin bryce/ Melbourne Club thing as an attack on the club!

Why can't bloody channel nine leave a bunch of comic geniuses to do their job, Make the rest of the world laugh! And how can they justify pouncing on one of the least offensive segments of the show last night?

Primary audience of ACA is old people.

Old people dislike the chaser.

And, well yeah, you get the picture.

It is really simple why they attacked them, from a media perspective. ACA do not do it because of a moral rage. They do it because people love the Chaser, and hence will watch anything remotely related with the Chaser. Do not think for one minute that Seven did not love the Chaser's relentless bashing of Anna Coren. Every time they did a reply story, their ratings went through the roof.

Having just watched the story in question, I was more concerned about ACA's assertion that the 2007 APEC summit was last year.

I think you're partly right.

Do you watch the gruen transfer? They were doing a bit in the last episode (you may still be able to podcast it), where they were talking about the fast food industry, and how they'd done ads responding to health concerns. They outlined that there was the danger for advertisers working for any industry that has been subject to criticism of becoming overly paranoid and obsessed with the criticism. You then end up producing onanistic ads that are produced by the company primarily to address their own insecurities, terrible ads that don't help the brand at all.

I think the relentless attacks upon the chaser by the current affairs programs are partly driven by this. The current affairs programs are small, ego driven teams, I wouldn't be surprised if insecurity is a big part of the motivation for the many chaser segments. They're scared that the chasers segments could genuinely undermine their ratings in the long term and too proud to simply ignore it.

If it improves ratings, that's a lucky consequence.

When current affair programs runs a story about a TV show on a rival network all it does it generate more publicity for the show in question and help give them more ratings.

like when ch7's today tonight ran some shit on 9's underbelly. all it did was make people want to watch underbelly more.

I did watch the Gruen Transfer. In a marketing degree, its pretty much essential viewing. Paranoia probably does play a part in ACA/TT responses, but I feel they are more driven by the guaranteed ratings. One ratings point is worth $35 million this year. Considering they have to do very little research (its dependent on the Chaser doing something controversial), its a really cost effective way to lure viewers.
