Subjects for Engineering (1 Viewer)

Hi all

I've been going over different Uni courses trying to decide on a career. Ive always had a interest for engineering so i looked over the different engineering courses available.
I enjoy doing project management kind of stuff so im looking at something like contructional/project engineering. Im not going to ask what Uni i should go to as from what ive read on other threads it just creates a flame fest. Recommendations in your post would be nice though.

My issue at the moment is that from what ive read Physics and Extension Maths is assumed knowledge. After reading more threads ive noticed that Physics isnt so much of a prerequisite, more of just they want you to be able to think that way.
My concern is that i dont do Extension Maths.
Im in the top class of 2u maths at my school which is a good school, but im not doing the best at the subject. Im good at understanding the methods of all the stuff we do induvidually but im not to good at remembering it and and applying it with other methods. Im getting a coach and im putting a lot more effort in to it now than compared to before, so im hoping to see my mark and rank improve.

Will i be able to get by in an engineering course?

Economics (doing well with a hopeless teacher)
Legal Studies (did ok with a crap teach but now have a gr8 1)

anyways, 2 unit is fine if you ask me. i did 2 unit and got Distinction for maths 1.....and a pass for maths 2......i had a band 5 for 2unit in HSC.

wait for Musk's answer. he is an expert in engineering.

yeah i know ive got plenty of time but like i said, i enjoy planning things.
Im hoping i can do well in my 2u maths, but competing against all the 3U and 4U people have really dropped my hopes of getting in a high percentile. tho im hoping that because i go to a good school and in the top 2U class that it will help me.

Well like i said i enjoy project management kind of stuff, so something like planning out the process for buildings and infrastructure then watching it go from the drawings up to the final stages. So mainly the planning of everything.

Yeah im happy to do a bridging course, but how would that work in with the engineering course. Would i do it beofre i do the course or just spend extra time doing the bridging course while i do the engineering course.

About the teacher the only reason im doing well is because i did put a lot of effort in to doing my own learning. I plan to keep that up and hopefully try push my self further to get the top marks in those particular subjects.


Any tips on what uni to go to? I live in north sydney so i dont want to travel too far, but i'd like to be good at what i do and have a constant stream of employment.

I would advise that you go over the material during the break rather than do a bridging course because they simply fire information at you so quickly and attempt to cover 2 years of material in 2 weeks. While most of the maths definitely is relevant depending on the course you do the physics may not all be relevent (motors and generators has no use in civil for instance)

I think go to whichever uni you prefer they are all fairly similar for engineering but the general consensus is that UTS is better for civil due to their focus on what you will be doing after you graduate and they constantly update their course.

Also i would advise to do plain civil first and pick your specialisation later as it is a broad field and you may find you prefer a different specialty.

I just looked over the UTS website and the course looks very good, especially since u can do bridging courses for maths and physics. But only 4 days/ 12 hours on physics...wow that must be really packed. I wonder if it would be worth doing.
Im looking at majoring in civil engineering then chosing either Civil, Strutures or Construction stream in that major.
Im still trying to difine the differences between them and which ones would require more maths/physics.

Yeah im not to worried about my english levels, im doing very well at standard english and my ranks are looking pretty good in that.

Can someone tell me the difference in the degree and career of Constructional and Structural Engineering?

Structural design. Designing structures. Basically, maths up the ying yang.

unsw, uts, usyd are all okay for civil, usyd less good than others but it's still okay. I'm at unsw, nobody is having any trouble finding jobs. Recommend you try and get 3 months work experience (just ring up engineering companies) at the end of 1st, 2nd and 3rd years, most ppl just do end of 3rd year.

You can always change your mind later on, the first few years are common to all streams of civil (and may subsequently seem irrelevant to your interests). Even when you've been working for a few years, you'll have lots of skills which are transferable to other areas.

Work experience may change your mind too, i was set on transport or construction until i worked in transport and construction, and now have very different priorities.

This would be a good place to start: Participating Organisations (ieaust list of companies with a development program)

Look through websites to see which ones relate to your field, search through for their careers section and most will have a contact number or email address or a description of how to apply.

Generally you'll a do three month block over summer. If you ask nicely, they might keep you on for one day a week during semester.
