Hi everyone,

I'm currently in Yr 10, planning to do my School Certificate Exam.
However, after Yr10, I am moving to a different school and I must choose the subjects i want to study.

My choices are:
- Economics (2 Unit)
- Business Studies (2 Unit)
- Legal Studies (2 Unit)
- Advanced English (2 Unit)
- English Extension (1 Unit)
- Modern History (2 Unit)
- Mathematics (2 Unit)
- Japanese (2 Unit)

So in total, that's 15 Units.

My questions are:
- How many units did you do? (Or are doing now)

-
I'm really excelling in Commerce at the moment, but 3 commerce studies?!?
Do you think that's too "excessive"?

-
Should I also take science?

Thanks in advance.
Any input would be much appreciated (^__^)y

I would recommend a max of 13 units, although 15 should be fine to start off with (provided that you eventually drop one once Year 11 gets going).

Don't feel pressured to do a science just for the sake of it. If you can do it well, then go for it. If it is something that you are interested in pursuing in the future, do it. If not, you will be wasting your time.

And although you feel the need to finalise your subjects now, don't stress. Everyone changes them a little bit between now and the end of term 1.

Thankyou for your contributions,
- Babkikakez (I read it as Bubbake too, lol)

I've made changes to my subject selections...

My choices are:
- Economics (2 Unit)
- Legal Studies (2 Unit)
- Advanced English (2 Unit)
- English Extension 1 (1 Unit)
- English Extension 2 (1 Unit)
- Modern History (2 Unit)
- Mathematics (2 Unit)
- Japanese (2 Unit)

So in total, that's 14 Units.
I really want to focus my skills in COMMERCE and ENGLISH.

That's why I chose to do 4 Units of English. You want to vomit, I hear you say?
And Japanese is my "fun" subject. The only thing that will keep me sane.

My questions are:
- What's involved in Economics? Do I have to be really good in Maths??

- Physics sounds good. I still need to substitute it in with another subject. Which one?

- I still think I'm going to be pressured under so many subjects... Any other suggestions you could make to me? 14 Units too much?

Thanks again guys.
Any contribution is much appreciated (^__^)y

If you love modern, stick with it. If you get ~93 or higher for modern it scales crazily.

I'd suggest not doing business to lessen your workload.

Don't feel pressured to do subjects that scale; do subjects that you like and you'll probably perform better in them, mkaing scaling irrelevant :)

I suggest not doing anymore than 13 units for the HSC. After all, they only take your top 10 so why keep extra 4+ units of work?

Swap Modern History for Physics, Modern History isn't commerce.
English Extension 2 is only done in Year 12 HSC.
Holy cow. I just learned so much things from those two lines!
(In all honesty. No sarcasm intended)

I'm really glad to hear that I don't have to do 4 Units of English in Year 11.
And I think that's a good plan, I'll swap Modern History for Physics.
So now it's...

My choices are:
- Economics (2 Unit)
- Legal Studies (2 Unit)
- Advanced English (2 Unit)
- English Extension 1 (1 Unit)
- Physics (2 Unit)
- Mathematics (2 Unit)
- Japanese (2 Unit)

So in total, that's 13 Units.
I really want to focus my skills in COMMERCE and ENGLISH.

Thanks again, Uncle -- you're a Life Saver.
You Seniors are really helpful.

no, eco does not focus on maths, it focuses more on concepts and most of it so far is just rote learning

do u really want to do physics?, as ur other subject selections seem more the essay writing subjects

and no, i don't think 14 is too much, most people do 13 at our school and i'm planning to also take 13units

Wow... Thanks Annabackwards!!
I've noticed that a lot of people are suggesting to drop Business Studies
Better take your advice!

I'm learning so much from you guys.
I will take this advice in to deep consideration,
You'd make great counselors.

Just a question, what are you actually interested in doing after school?

Thank you for your contribution, d3st1nyliang.
I'm happy to hear that Economics doesn't involve too much math.
I'm more of an English person.
Essays are my best friend. (^__^)y
Can't really say the same about "Factorising Quadratic Trinomials" ~HELL NO.

I just put maths in my subject selections for the sake of it.
It's only 2 Unit, and I think I'll manage okay.

I can see what you're trying to say.
I could either have:
- More variety, by adding PHYSICS
- Or stick to essay writing with MODERN HISTORY

I'm only in Year 10, so I have lots of time (I think ..)
Thanks for your contributions.

Regarding your choice between either Physics or Modern History, you can always change subjects in Year 11 if you feel that you dont like it.

There's still a few months till subject selection for next year, so take it easy :)

A variation of subjects is good, although i'd only advise physics if you are confident with it. Then again, my friend tells me it's easier than maths.
