alright, everytime i've asked anyone about them they always say they are shit because of the jobs they cost

was wondering what some BoS members think?

nah i like them, they are heaps faster than checkout chicks and atleast you're doing something other than standing there awkwardly while some retard packs your groceries incorrectly.

I was talking to friends who work at woolies during uni and stuff, they were telling me some how it requires more staff atm.

Most people do not use them for trolley fulls worth of stuff, mainly just one or two things.

I don't see how self serve checkouts would require MORE staff.

1 staff member takes care of 6 or so self serve checkouts. As opposed to 3-4 normal/express checkouts

you have to kind of like.... pinch the bag in the centre at the top just below where the little hanging thing is, using your thumb and forefinger, then slide your thumb backwards and pull the bag forward......

Well duh. They are meant to replace express checkouts.

Also, there is no way that they can require more staff. They require one person to preside over the area for customer service/security. Considering most stores have 6-10 SSC, there is no way you can quantify that statement.

I love them, since I used to work at woolies and am a lot faster than most of the people working there. They're really well designed as well, so you dont even have to touch the screen if ur paying with cash.

And Ive noticed that at my local shop, staff seem to have been moved to other registers rather than sacked... the queues have shortened heaps since these things were introduced

I shop online whenever possible, rather than at local businesses, for the same reason.

you do get the odd person who tries to take a epic amount of stuff with them though, and that always fails

well, in that case, if there are no more conveyor belts as a result of the absence of checkouts, im going to train out the back in the meat processing area. that 25 kg hunk of cow carcass makes a good punching bag.
well at least when security chases me out for a good cardio there arent as many checkouts obstructing the way.
no difference for self serve, people are easier to push out of the way.

Well i operate them at Big W, 25hours p/w,(while doin the HSC :|) Big W and Woolworths have not cut employees or decreased their hours because of it. It opens more job opportunites and increased pay rates due to training in specialised areas.

Long term, they will cut back on checkout staff though, that's the whole point. It's costs thousands to bring this system in, they're not going to invest the money for no reason.
