State politicians debate camel eating

IN proof the big issues are on the menu at State Parliament, MPs have considered whether the state should eat its feral camel population.
Possibly thousands of the 1800kg beasts are roaming in the far northwest and one solution raised by a Labor MP is to eat them.
The Government said it would consider a camel food industry in NSW if the number of roaming camels grows.
Cessnock MP Kerry Hickey's electorate is free of camels but he yesterday said he acted after constituents came to him.
He asked Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald in Parliament if killing camels for food to sell in NSW and overseas could be considered.
"One of the branch members raised the issue, apparently they do (eat camels) over in Arabic countries," Mr Hickey said yesterday.
Camel steaks are tender, almost cholesterol-free and retail in the Northern Territory for as much as $38/kg, Coolah camel farmer Ken Tuckey said.
Mr Tuckey has owned camels for decades and once walked six 2800km across the Central Australian desert to his farm.
"You can eat camel, there's nothing wrong with it but I don't because I have got camels . . . there's enough other animals to eat," Mr Tuckey said.
Acting Opposition Leader Andrew Stoner said the time spent in Parliament worrying about eating camels was a waste at the end of a week in which a report on the elusive black panther was released and the state's new waratah symbol was revealed to be a lotus.
"Talk about wrong priorities," he said.
I fail to see why people would not percieve this as worthwhile? Wouldnt any alternative food sources these days be welcomed? Especially if it helps combat feral pests like Camels?
Sometimes i just cant get over the sheer stupidity of people. I would love to see a feral pest food industry, it would be amazing. Its bad enough that roo shooting is so heavily legislated. If it was made easier or there was a larger market for ferals like Camel, horse, donkey pig and goat i would be in it for sure. Shooting animals all day for money is sure better than sitting in an office amirite guys?
