Many of you may of heard of the merge between Microsoft and Yahoo to combat Google's absolute dominance and control over the search engine and search world on the Internet. So, Microsoft and Yahoo have merged to form bing! ^_^ (what a funny name).

They are calling it a 'decision engine' not a search engine, as it helps you to make the best decision about what you are looking for :). Personally, I like it but am not sure about the product's success on the market (since Google basically owns the Internet these days, in terms of finding something you want with simplicity and ease). I've even made it my homepage in it's support ^_^ haha.

Bing is in the beta stages and can be found here: Bing

Some news about the merge here: Microsoft and Yahoo! finally unite in search deal to battle Google - Software - Breaking Business and Technology News at silicon.com and here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_microsoft_yahoo

What are your thoughts on the merge? On the 'decision engine' bing... aesthetics (etc.) and such... Do you prefer Google or Bing?

That's one opinion... I don't think it's great... but it's still good.

Google is a decision making engine as well. Searches don't yield 'raw' results they yield ranked results, any ranking system is a decision based search of some sort. Google's servers make decisions about what is the most useful/relevant result and rank them.

Two things determine this:
1. number of other sites which link to the results
2. whether or not someone has paid to have their result appear

PS: #2 includes the main list results not just the 'sponsored links' - I know this because I work in an organisation that buys rankings for some of our websites. I also work with intranet implemmentations of the Google Search Appliance.

Whilst this merger and challenge to Google has been reported in the news media I can't help but think that the thread would be better in IT Central than in NCAP....

...unless the thread was heading towards a discussion of how google's dominance of the internet effects society and shapes how we communicate...

Only if you send it there ;)

Edit: Oh, and yes... Google owns the way we communicate, research and even develop. "Google" has been a verb for god sakes... for quite some time. That really shows an achievement and level of importance in our society.

I guess this means I sent it there >_>

people use redtube or youporn for porn.

as for bing, it will have minimal impact on google's marketshare. our choice of search engine - google - is firmly ingrained into our minds and i don't see why people would feel the need to change.

Googol = 10^100 --> Google

The word "bing" is an onomatopoeia, a word that imitates the sound it represents. Through focus groups Microsoft decided that the name Bing was memorable, short, easy to spell, and that it would function well as a URL around the world. The word would remind people of the sound made during "the moment of discovery and decision making."

...

Bing also has a less positive connotation in Scotland where the word is commonly understood to refer to a slag heap.
