you don't 'go to the army and train as a medic', rather, as part of the sponsored undergrad scheme, you get paid to study at uni, and then get trained and work in the defence force. the scheme applies to medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, radiology, law, enviro health, engo, business and arts students.

The army does not train any doctors or run medical degrees, they only financially sponsor medical students who are already studying medicine. Medics are battlefield first aid attendants and not doctors.
It's not worth going overseas (New Zealand does not count as their courses are accrediated by the AMC), as getting accreditation and your degree recognised by the AMC is extremely difficult. You may even have to redo some of your degree in Australia. IMO it's not worth going overseas (esp developing countries, who have their own doctor shortages) for a piece of paper that may not even be recognised here.
If you miss out first go, like I did try entering as a non-standard at UWS, UNCLE, Bond, JCU, UAdel (only if you are currently studying there or do first year there), UTAS, UWA, etc. Or do an undergrad degree, sit gamsat, interviews, etc and try to get in that route. Another route is by entering through select schemes such as the Sci Adv Scheme at UWS, the Med Sci (Hons) scheme at UNSW, combined programs at Usyd, Griffith, Flinders, Uq, etc (you will typically need an ATAR/UAI of high 99.XX to get into some of these programs or bonus points, good umat, etc, etc, etc).
Short answer there is no best method!
