I had the 2G (recently upgraded to 3GS) and had your same problem (home button doesn't work + computer doesn't recognise it) after dropping the phone. I had it repaired by FiXPOD in Sydney, fixed with no hassles. Cost me about $150.
took a look at FiXPOD and their prices are very expensive =S

for the broken home screen, its possible to get the whole set for $30 and do it yourself lol

Expensive, but good at what they do & you get what you pay for. You just send it in, get a quote and if you don't like the price, they send the phone back. But then again if it's only a 2G phone, really not worth the money (mine was only ~6mths old) when I had it repaired.
