Hello,
I don't know whether to do 10 units and spend all my time on those, or have the extra backup for my ATAR, so I need some help choosing what to do next year.

Here are my current subjects and my rank (aprox because it's changed since half yearly report)

2 Unit Advanced English 18th - 22nd
2 Unit Mathematics 3rd - 4th
1 Unit Extension Maths =1st
2 Unit Physics 2nd
2 Unit Ancient History 1st-3rd
2 Unit Business Studies 5th
2 Unit Chemistry 2nd

Possible Extras:
1 Unit Maths Extension 2
1 Unit History Extension

Some of the things I've considered:
1. Drop Chemistry and Business studies, and pick up ext history, 10 units
2. Drop Chemistry, 11 units
3. Drop chemistry and Business studies and pick up ext maths 2, 10 units
4. Drop Chemistry and pickup an ext, 12 units

How differently does History extension scale compared to ext 2 maths? Is the extra scaling worth the extra workload? Is having 10 units with all the free periods etc.. worth having no backup units for my ATAR?

Difference is like heaven and earth. If you can cope (and I'm sure you will since you're 1st in 3U) you will have no trouble with MX2. So for you, the ratio of the extra scaling to the extra workload would be very high. Thus definitely pick up 4U.

Since it seems you are doing fairly well in 10 units worth of subjects, I would recommend you drop to 10 units. This will allow you to use your time very efficiently.

LOL, wheres an option where you don't drop chem?

I would suggest you keep chem, and drop ancient and business instead (due to scaling).

i was gona say drop business (since its boring and i regret choosing it everyday) and either leave it at 11 units or pick up 4U maths and have 12 units

but since u apparently dont like chem, i spose u cud drop that instead??? but ur doing so well in it n it scales a zillion times better than business..... its in ur best interest 2 keep chem n drop business

either way i wouldnt have less then 11 units.

My rank in chem doesn't really do my knowledge in the subject justice.. to put it simply, my whole class is going really badly and that's why I'm 2nd.. My teacher treats us like 5 year olds and doesn't actually teach us anything.. when you ask her to explain it she says stuff like, "you know that you've just got to pull it out of your long term memory" and stupid things like that... she is nice.. but I just don't think she is a good teacher (for me at least anyway).. \

The reason I haven't been strongly concidering Ext 2 is because even though I'm first.. It just seems like I don't get some of the harder things.. and some of the harder things we do, even though I can answer the questions.. I don't actually understand fully what it is I'm doing...

How much harder do you guys think ext 2 is compared to 1?

How badly does Ancient History scale? I'm pretty good at it and I think I could get around 85-90 in it.... What's and aprox mark I would have to get in chem for it to be better then 85 in history? I think I could only get around 65 or so in chem.

I think I will deffinetely do Ext 2 now over ext history.. after putting some marks into SAM UAI calculator and finding that 60 in Ext 2 would count towards UAI before 80 un Ext History.. lol

I'm thinking that I will drop chem, pick up ext 2 then leave it like that for a few weeks, and drop BS after a while just to make sure I'm OK with Ext 2.. in the meanwhile I might borrow an Ext 2 textbook and have a look through it in the holidays before I have to make my decision.

I would definitely choose mx2 over history extension too. It is much more rewarding, challenging and interesting.

Everyone keeps knocking business. The thing is, business still scales well. Chem does scale better but if you do crap in a subject because you hate it, it's still going to scale crap.
My advice is that you keep what subjects you like and drop what you hate (and it would seem that you hate chemistry)

I'm only doing well in it because everyone else is doing worse than I am..
yeah, my class is going really badly as well, but that is the teachers fault, omg he is soooooooooooooo @#@@%@$#%#%@#$%@

but i like chem. if you do too then keep it, if not then drop it. There is no point making yourself (more) miserable in HSC year, and if you are going to do better in another sub too. Dont worry about the scaling

I personally don't like my teachers methods, I don't like how she explains stuff, I don't like her treating us like 5 year olds, I don't like her using the excuse "it prepares you for uni, you need teach yourself" as an excuse to basically never write notes... There is a few very smart people in my year and pretty much our entire class is going very badly in chemistry.. also we've been having a uni prac teacher the last few days, and I seriously have learnt more then I have the entire year.

My main worry now is if I drop down to 10 units including 4 unit maths, if I stuff up in the ext 2 test or something I'm screwed.
