Yes, I understand your point and if they are in that situation they do indeed have no one to blame but themselves.

Yes, this does apply to me, I am a fuckwit, lol.

Well no, if they are in that situation I don't agree that they only have themselves to blame. It's not their fault that they are in that situation, and that is the crux of the issue. When people say 'woman x has herself to blame', they're only reinforcing the idea that domestic violence is ok.

They just need to get out of there ASAP.

Anyway I can't discuss this anymore, I've just found the biggest lowies on earth in the pic thread and their beauty has stolen my attention

Interesting course this thread has taken. On another venue, the discussion has leaned more towards the fact that for many men, "marital rape" is an oxymoron.

Direct quotes:

"On an unrelated point I've always found unnatural the concept of rape in marriage. Technically there might be rape in marriage, but why would a women marry a man she did not want to be sexually involved with?"

"I don't dispute that in a stipulative sense a woman cannot be raped her husband. But that does not make the idea of it unnatural in the context of social norms. I guess this is reflected by the fact that it has always been legally exempt from the charge of rape - I believe it was only in mid 1990's that the english House of Lords abolished that exemption. There is the widespread social understanding that when people marry they are agreeing to make themselves sexually available eachother."

Anyway, in reference to Kwayera's recent post, I do think those behind the quotes are complete fucktards, who are unaware of personal circumstance and context. If your wife says NO it's NO idiots. Perhaps the wives should kick each the husbands in the balls all the time - some consider that a sexual turn on, so why would a man marry a woman whom he did not want to be sexually involved with?

Why so outraged? This has been happening since the first Arab couple - it's how it's always been. What people seem to forget is that the concept of women's rights is a western invention. We have no right to force our views on other sovereign nations and cultures, it is part of their identity and history.

But how much do you let slide in the name of cultural tolerance?

we have every right. our culture is superior. unlike their culture, western culture has actually evolved in the last thousand years. also, it isnt influenced by an imaginary man in the sky.

we have absolutely no right at all. we're not superior, we're different. obviously both cultues have flaws. the islam extremists treatment of women being a scathingly obvious example, but the west is no where no perfect. We've seen what happens when the west try to impose its way of life on other cultures (Iraq, Afghanistan?)

I think this law is disgusting, but i highly doubt its representative of the majority of the islam community.

Incorrect.

it's not representative of moderate muslims. It's representative of muslim countries who adopt sharia law, which includes a large proportion of islamic states. so i would say yes, it is representative of the majority of the islamic community, given the majority of the worldwide islamic community lives in these countries

following your logic the law is representative of those who govern these countries, and in many cases the governing powers have seized control by force, not by the support of the people.
