Agreed. In fact, a recent poll showed that 60% of Australians support gay marriage, which was a 3% rise from the last time they did it. So it can only go up from here, especially as young people have a higher rate of tolerance, and they'll be the ones making the policies. The argument the govt. has about 'Australian values' of marriage being between a man and a woman is obviously bull, as indicated by the results of the survey.

It's important because gays are not some separate little group that live on their own island. They live in Australia, are part of the same Australian society as straights, a country that purports to value equality. The issue affects those straights who want to be true to these important values as proud Australians, to make the nation better for everyone, not just themselves. These people can look beyond themselves and have empathy for others, realising the importance of these ideals. Also, even if they are not gay themselves, they are most likely to know a gay person, therefore bringing the issue into their lives. If nothing else, it's a matter of principle.
