I thought of this situation last year but never ended up asking it/getting a conclusive answer.
Say if there are 2 students in a school doing a subject, Student A and Student B.
Let's say they're internal marks (raw and unscaled) are:
Student A : 80%
Student B : 70%

Let's say their examination marks (externals) (aligned) are:
Student A: 60
Student B: 90

What would their resulting scaled/moderated internal marks be?

Student A: 50's
Student B: 80's

School rank is also needed to make a more accurate guesstimate.

Student A: 90, (top rank student in internals gets highest external as scaled internal)
Student B: 60, (this is done so the mean of the scaled internals = mean of externals)

this is only because there are 2 students, from scaling of internal raw to internal scaled, the mean and standard deviation of the marks match the mean and std of the externals and the top of internals scaled matches top of externals

yeah okay, thats what i was thinking, but it means u can screw someone up if you're mean.
Say you have 12 units, and theres 2 people in your course and you're just beating them. You can be mean and get 0 and the other person will get 0 for internal??

from experience, if someone is coming 2nd in a course and they get the top hsc external mark, then the person coming 1st can only get, as a maximum, the same mark as the person that came 2nd.

in the above case, it would mean they would find a point near the middle, about 77-78, and both would get that mark.
