Hmm. This has been in the planing stages for many years. The Gorgon gas deal is barely months old. It's mainly coincidence - WA has the best radio quiet in the world, so most, but not all, of the dish will be built there.

We could, but all the processing power will be spent on analysing the SKA's data. Even then most data will need to be dumped once analysed in real-time in memory, since no storage technology currently exists that wouldn't fill up to max capacity in the first day of use.

An exaflops supercomputer is a minimum requirement for an SKA. There will be no cores left for studying the opposite of glass annealing.
