there are just some very similar questions...
this is a PM to a mod.. but ill answer it..

I know that you have to get a UAI of about 99 to do undergraduate medicine, and I can probably only get about 95-ish for my UAI.

SO, I am thinking about doing bachelor of psych at sydney uni or macquarie, and then doing medicine afterwards to become a psychiatrist, gynaecologist or dermatologist.

Do NOT do BPsych unless u want to do psych... cos its just a waste if u dun make medicine..

then u still have to do 2 yrs APS training like (PhD or Masters) and experience in clinical psychology.

and for med its just as good if u do BNursing

How long am I going to be in uni for???

minimum
4 yrs of BPsych
4 yrs of grad Medical degree
[its longer if u end up at UNSW or non grad-entry med course up to 6 yrs]

there is then some work experience u need to do.. minimum 2 yrs

5-7 yrs part time study to specialise under a post grad medical college(e.g. RACP or RACS... google it.. dun ask..).

Grad med school is but I am not too certain about the numbers vs yr12/undergrad entry

specialty-wise its very competitive
like dermo has lik 2-3 places every yr.. and some ppl.. just reapply till they get it.. so their work exp lasts lik 6-7 yrs... its supply and demand.. and then u just give up and do another specialty if u dun get it..

does one of the above professions have a shorter time than another?

yes the training is longest on gynaecology.... cos of the case load minimum that ppl have to observe and get experience from.

And what qualifications am I going to need?? like UMAT and what interviews??

GAMSAT for the grad med school
Interviews too

and there is interviews for the specialty post-grad medical colleges

If psychiatry is basically the same as psychology (except that you can prescribe medicine) would it be shorter than the others, seeing that I would have already done bachelor of psych??

No...

its not a university undergrad level training program ... and its got a very large pharmacology component too

Psychology also focuses on behvaioural therapy.. which psychiatry doesnt..

also psychology is the understanding the mind and behaviour and psychiatry is more the pathology of diseases of the CNS.. so u need to understand co-morbidities too.. its not the same thing.

if u dun understand sumfing google it or search BoS for it.... then post a question...

but its more proper clinical exposure and pathophysiology..

nurses get how pulmonary oedema happens..vomiting signs.. and wat COPD is..

a psychologist would just nod and ask more about ure mother's relationship with you... i feel they lack the human bio component more important for the GAMSAT.. but then u shouldnt study sumfing for gamsat..

nursing also guarantees u a job..

yep dehydration..
the possibility of MI or DKA.. or pancreatitis or complications like Mallory Weiss tear.. etc etc..

i just think nursing is not a half bad premed course in that sense...

aaah, i thought you meant "signs that someone is vomiting"

but people won't do nursing because it's not sexy. and if anyone found out you were in it to do med everyone would hate you forever. i was asked by a lecturer what specialty i wanted to go into and when i couldn't answer (because right now i'm enjoying all the areas i've worked in) she snapped "so are you one of those people that's only doing nursing to transfer to something else?"

i actually have a friend who finished her BN last year and plans to do grad med @ usyd next year (was her plan since leaving high school - always wanted to be a paediatrician ) and i asked one of the interns at work what she thought about it. she just said that my friend will be more knowledgable regarding the ward/hospital environment but may have more difficulty with the science aspect when it's likely she'll be studying with mostly med science grads.

so, in regards to the original post, a BPsych grad seems to lose out on both counts...

u can do a pscyh degree as a postgrad in a year. if you're that interested do a proper course before doing psych.

I hear clinical science is a good one to start a medical degree with. csu has a stream where you go straight into med after doing it.

i think at griffith too you can do some degree for 2 years and get straight into med, cant remember the name of it though

What? Elaborate. The APA have specific requirements, which is generally a 4 year undergraduate degree, 2 years supervised experience or postgraduate training.

If you don't achieve this, you can't practice under the name 'Psychologist', even if you have say a 3-year Psychology degree.

I don't think you should do "any" degree as 'pre-med' study unless you're prepared to 'take it' if you don't get in Medicine..

Yeah, i got that wrong, I've done an ungergrad 3 yr course and i was looking at postgrad ans must have thought the postgrad dip was a 1 year add on course ages ago.

I know the postgrad dip is just the same as honours but less prestige but i for some reason thought there was a way to do a 1 year postgrad course instead of a whole undergrad.

In any case, there aren't many job opportunities for psych, stick with med and you'll be laughing. You have to do 6 years of unpaid study with 1 year honors/ postgrad dip and either two years supervised prac (fulfilling requirements for registration in this time through training) or 2 years masters.

Or in 6 years with that 2 year accelerated thing (if ur out of high school you could be a doctor).
