Seriously how was it any more complicated in ANY situation than just talking to someone about it. Saying "so hey, I dunno what your plans are, but I was wondering if you wanted to come to the formal with me"... take little effort and no practice, doesn't make you look like a douche, shows that he wasn't a "just because we're friends/cute" choice and makes you seem coherant enough for him to make a decision without freaking out.
