proving that someone was downloading an illegal torrent is very hard to prove. Even 'large amounts of bandwidth' isnt enough evidence - i download linux isos all the time.

The IT are spastics if they think this work. bahahahaha its actually quite funny

How did you not realise that your torrent client started up? It takes a while before it even starts downloading so you had tons of time to shut it down. This reeks of BS.

It's not very believable if you ask me. I might not know much about P2P protocol, but I don't think it's that easy to pinpoint exactly what data has been transmitted to which user....Then again I might be ignorant, in which case: megaupload fyeah

the way they detect torrent downloads is that torrent works by thrashing your bandwidth to download with many connections. they can detect that and then deduce that it was most ilkely via torrents. That or downloading multiple things at once like 17+ direct file downloads.

Both of which are against the ToS on using Uniwide.

AAAGGGGHHH I can't believe it, have just been busted for copyright ($480 fine!!!!!) cos I forgot to turn off my Torrent auto-start when I came on campus. Cranked up wireless to check email and whammy - download from home started right up again and I got stung!

Thought they'd let me off when I told them it was accident, but nah

Sooooo......if you can afford a huge fine, don't worry about it. Otherwise, disable the Torrent when on the uni network.

The easiest way would be to set up a torrent client, then run a search with something generic, then filter the ips to only the uni ones.

Upfront – I’m both a student and staff member - but not in Central IT (guess we start where's Wally now).

Uni is cracking down because they provide a free service and some individuals can't play by the rules. Check out what iiNet is going through at the moment and see why the Uni doesn't want anything to do with it. I know a heap of students have been fined and blocked from access. And yes the fine is $480 and if you are caught, you generally wear the fine. Do the crime - pay the time. No big deal - not really except you can’t enroll next semester or graduate till you pay it. Plus you are blocked from the Wireless. Ask Geekgirl about this!

I leave my downloads for off campus - the wireless is pretty red hot for other stuff, so want it available when I am studying. Just remember to turn everything off when on Campus - I spoke to the central IT bods and there are no excuses otherwise everyone will say "oh.. I accidentally left it on". Tell your story walking and call a friend...maybe they might care. And before you ask – no idea who Geekgirl is... Her story checks out for the fine and reasons – but maybe staff. Don’t know?
Davo is right on one of the ways they get you and they only get you for breaching copyright or reasonable use, not for just using torrents. Usually sparked off by copyright bods issuing a legal notice of infringement to the Uni.

So let the abuse begin... Should have signed up last year when I started my course - missed out on all the fun.

at unsw, wireless use to be paid as well. but they started giving free net i think at the back part of 2007. this was one of the main reasons for my hesitation in getting a laptop.
