Re: BOS political compass scatterplot

Then why don't we just have all goods allocated by the state. I'm using an expensive bourgeoise computer to answer this thread when the bare minimum I would need would be a netbook.

Your line of reasoning is fairly specious.
And the reason the state shouldn't allocate these goods aside from some ooga booga Orwellian tales?

But I'm slightly naughty at times and after I've finished my shift at the warehouse I warm up a meat pie and a coke. It feels so tempting in the short term but imagine how happy i would be in the longterm if over the past 12 months i've been at this warehouse instead of letting me keep my money which i then go and spend on the pie and the coke the state would just take five bucks out of my pay check and give me is a salad sandwich and a glass of low fat milk?

fat commie.

you'd be happy? besides the fact that, at the current circumstance, whenever you feel like it, you can opt to have a sausage roll and fanta instead? HELL, YOU COULD EVEN HAVE THE SALAD SANDWICH AND THE LOW FAT MILK REGARDLESS! you know whyyyy? because we live in a wonderful materialistic society which allows us choice.

choice is what you will not have.

all the salad sandwich and low fat milk in the world will not be enough to satisfy a human's need for options and variety.

again u are fat.

Yes I know what I can do and dare I say it I know what I should do but that doesn't mean I always do it. Are you saying its a good thing I opt for the pie? Are you saying I'd be unhappier if I was fitter, healthier, better educated and received better healthcare which would be the case for a vast majority of people if experts in Canberra told us what we had for breakfast and what we did on a Friday nights?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot

I'm saying it's a good thing that you have the choice of a pie. You know it's not good for you, why are you opting for it? Why do you want to be opressed and spoonfed your decisions? You're an adult capable of making your own. Just because you lack the willpower to do what's good for you, it doesn't mean the rest of us want to be told what to do, what to say, and when to do it.

Have you ever lived under a government (hell, under parents, any authority) where you didn't have choices?

You may be physically fitter, physically healthier and academically better educated if we lived in such a state. Would it be any good for your mental development? Aw hell naw.

Economic Left/Right = 1.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian = -4.82

Guessing I'm fiscally centrist, with a tendency to lean towards the right, and definitely social libertarian..

So many bottom-lefts on the compass.....

It may be a good thing that you opt for the pie. You may be happier choosing the pleasure of pies over the benefits of long term health. That is a decision for you, and you alone to make.

It's a ridiculous assumption that every decision that maximizes health outcomes is always best. What is the point of being healthy if you don't enjoy life?

By this logic we should all live next to hospitals, never drink alcohol, walk to work (car accidents are a huge killer) and spend our free time exercising and researching and preparing our scientifically optimized, micro-nutritionally balanced, healthy diets.

We all routinely make trade offs between immediate pleasure and long term health. The optimal balance will necessarily be different for every individual.

thanks for that. Very liberal compared to most people I know.
In that case your friends are probably communist/socialist.

Your views are socially liberal however are economically your views are almost the opposite of liberal. You believe that people are cap[able of making decisions in their personal lives but not in the marketplace.

Lay off mate. I know exactly what my views are, and I'm most definitely not economically conservative. I'm far more socialist than most people I know, and socially liberal.

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot

Some of the questions do not ask specifically about what policies you support, they merely try to gauge your feelings about certain issues. This leads to problems.

Classic example: "Sex outside marriage is usually immoral." You may well think it is immoral, but unless you want to impose that view in some way through the political system it is irrelevant to your score.

Take Ron Paul, who has personal beliefs that are quite conservative, but who advocates public policy that is extremely liberal.

As an anarcho-capitalist my true score would be 10, -10. But I actually scored:

Economic Left/Right: 6.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.51
