Caught copying in exam, student commits suicide

TNN 12 November 2009, 06:26am IST CHENNAI: A Class 10 student who was caught copying during an examination allegedly committed suicide by hanging at his residence in Uthandi. Terrified at the prospect of taking his parents to meet the headmaster of the school, the boy first drank a pesticide and then hanged himself using his mother's sari.

Police said that the boy's parents refused to lodge a complaint. They had cremated his body before informing the police.

According to the police, B Karthik (16), student of a school in Neelankarai, was caught by the invigilator while trying to copy during a term examination on Tuesday. Karthik, considered a bright student, was scolded by the teacher. She asked him why he had to copy when he could fare well in examination without doing so. She also told him to bring his parents the next day to meet the headmaster, the police said.

Acccording to the police, Karthik had apparently informed his parents about the incident and they assured him that they would help sort out the problem. However, the boy did not wait for that to happen.

Experts in child behaviour say that students have to be encouraged to talk about problems to get over anxiety and stress. Sneha, an organisation that works to prevent suicides by children, provides round-the-year programmes to enable schoolchildren cope with stress.

"Parents and children can call us at 24640050 for help. We get children to speak out about anything troubling them. What we discuss with children remains confidential and we do not disclose it with parents or teachers. Once they are able to talk aloud, they feel better. It's a pressure-cooker-like situation. If steam is let out then everything calms down," Shanti Chellappa, director, Sneha, told The Times Of India.

Yeah, this universally a major cause for concern everywhere, especially senior school exams (i.e. the VCE, HSC).

Yes I totally agree, the level of cheating going on is just disgusting, something needs to be done!

Thanks for taking yourself out of the gene pool.

Why pesticide first. Dying from hanging isn't slow and painful enough?

why is this news? like its sad yes, but this happens virtually every year, at some school, some country, its common place.

OP: did you post this to imply Indian kids are under pressure to the extent that they commit suicide?

In what way was that bigoted?
Why would you even joke about that kind of shit? If suicide was the less painful alternative to facing his parents, what do you think his parents would do? Not everyone is lucky enough to be from a nice suburban family.

It's hilarious.

What a moron. Why pesticide? Clearly he's a weaker species and has done the gene pool well by not passing on his seed.

a 'weaker species'? You realize Homo Sapiens are one species? Unless you think different races are of different species. Well, that wouldn't surprise me given your long lineage of racist and hate preaching posts.

I've mentioned nothing of his race. I've mentioned him as a species, which you've just pointed out is the Homo Sapien species. Thank you.

mabye it's normal to relish in the tragic death of indian teenagers up in the south central coast, where you bigots idolise Pauline Hanson, but those of us who consider Indians as fellow human beings do not wish to hear your white-australia diatribe

lol I still have no idea what you're talking about.

If he were a white retard, necking himself because his mummy and daddy were going to ban him from the X Box for cheating, I'd share the same sentiments.

Stop trying to create something that doesn't exist in my post.

The racist remarks you made before where overt to say the least.
So if your family member committed suicide you would scoff and yell 'survival of the fittest, all the moron unclean races will perish- haha- take yourself out of the gene pool!'. What a revolting thing to say. You ought to be ashamed that the offal located between your ears shat out such abhorrent thoughts.

@'Big Boy James' hopefully you will grow out of your peculiar hate mongering.
