I've been reading the forums and everyone seems to agree that living in a college - Bruce, Ursies, Johns etc is the way to go...however, i'm really keen on living in unilodge because i'd like to have my own studio. Will i be socially disadvantaged in anyway? i mean, i just prefer having my own place and space that is relatively large.

I'll be a first year. Also, how does everyone manage to balance extra-cirricular activities, participation in programs, partying and good grades? is it a bit of a tradeoff? study harder for good grades means less time to participate in social events etc?

1st papragraph, put simply, yes.
2nd paragraph - it's about finding the right balance. I had troubles finding it when i first arrived, but it doesn't take long to find the right balance. you can do everything you want provided you're organised.

I would advise staying in a college for at least one year, if for nothing more than to establish a network of friends. Uni Lodge is home to ESL students and jaded white people. UL is starting to get some community spirit going but it's still got a long way to go. Although next year's intake is going to be lucky because they'll have me as company.

You've got what, 16 hours awake per day? That's more than enough time for everything. Unless you're a raging alcoholic you probably won't be partying _that_ much (especially if you're the sort of person who would prefer to live in a studio).

well i wanna stay at UL cause a friend might be attending anu with me and the double share studio suits our needs...i think the best idea would be for me to come down to canberra sometime and check out the campus.

hopefully UL is close to all the lecture theatres etc

UL is closer to Arts/Business and Economics, further from Sciences/Engineering to put it very broadly. Nowhere is particularly far walk. Although hiking to a 9am lecture when it's 5 degrees in thongs loses it's appeal pretty quickly.

I lived in Unilodge in my first semester at ANU and I had a great time. To be sure, living at unilodge is not so great in terms of social activity on a large scale, ie. entire college parties etc. However, I made a great close group of friends with the people who I was living with and there were quite a few opportunities for entire-unilodge socialising during O week. They improve it every year, so 2010 should be pretty cool too.

On top of that, if you really would like your own kitchen and bathroom, the double studio is quite affordable (according to 2009 prices... i'm not so sure about 2010 prices).

If you're keen to meet people, there is plenty of opportunity to do so in other areas of uni. You might have to put more effort in than if you were living at college...

But it's ultimately what you make of it.

'did you have to break a 48 or 52 week contract and if so what were the consequences?
I have been offered a place in unilodge 48 or 52 week contract but what if I want to move out earlier?
