Songs (NOTE: you need to analyse every aspect of a song including lyrics and the musical elements) Oh and these are just songs I considered analysing as related texts. I'm sure there are plenty more out there.

  • From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea by the Cure
  • I am a Rock by Simon and Garfunkel
  • Drowning by Hootie and the Blowfish
  • The Way It Is by Bruce Hornsby
  • The Fool on the Hill by the Beatles
  • Society by Eddie Vedder
  • Manifest Destiny by Jamiroquai
  • Going to a Town by Rufus Wainwright
  • Dinner at Eight by Rufus Wainwright
  • Special Ones by George
  • Jaded by George
  • Katie by Missy Higgins

Books

  • Mostly Harmless by Douglas Adams
  • Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
  • Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice-Burroughs
  • Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
  • The Virgin Blue by Tracy Chevalier (I haven't read it in a while but from memory it seems like it would be a good text for Belonging)
  • Notre Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo
  • Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince or Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling (I believe these would make much better related texts than the first four if you really want to analyse Harry Potter)
  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey
  • The Tomorrow Series by John Marsden
  • The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells (I am assuming it would be great because I read the first three chapters while I was in Borders the other day and it seemed like a good text for Belonging)
  • The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
  • Animal Farm by George Orwell (however it is much better suited to Conflicting Perspectives if you are doing Advanced)
  • A Dry White Season by Andre Brink
Films

  • Into the Wild - NOTES FOUND HERE http://community.boredofstudies.org/818/concept-belonging/240615/into-wild-film-notes.html (please, for the love of God, don't ask me for any more notes besides these. I hand wrote all of my notes for all of my subjects and I have already given all of my English notes to a friend of mine anyway. Unfortunately I do not have any more copies. I apologise if you cannot read my handwriting and/or if the notes make no sense)
  • It's a Wonderful Life
  • Breakfast at Tiffany's
  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
  • The Colour Purple
  • Girl With a Pearl Earring
  • About a Boy
  • Yolngu Boy
  • Cry Freedom

Visual Texts

And that's all I can think of right now. If I think of any more then I will edit this list.

One of mine was Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, the one about the school shooting. It's pretty awesome for Belonging.

Re: films for belonging

i'm not sure what films would be good to use but i know using 'bend if like beckham' edward scissorhands' are used alot so it might be best to avoid them

Re: films for belonging

I recommend Kite Runner. It is an absolutely wonderful film, relates with belonging, cultural heritage, relationships and sacrifice (all three of which are very commonly asked in HSC style questions).

There is nothing wrong with using Brokeback Mountain, irrespective of what school you go to, regarding the 'questionable issues' raised. The only issue that you should be thinking of is whether or not it would be a good related text that goes well with your thesis. :)
