It's an awesome film, if you're willing to forgive it the script. Heck, it's practically identical to Dune.

I dont really judge movies by their visuals. Good visuals are expected, and this movie delivers in that sense (just like many others do too).
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie for the story, the characters, the imaginary world of Pandora, the idea that the native inhabitants are so connected with nature, maybe some more reasons.

This thread is becoming too serious.

I thought the point of this movie (and the vast majority of movies) was to entertain and be enjoyed by its viewers, not to have a perfectly unique, god-like and completely flawless plotline. It almost sounds like some people want only movies that appeal to their highly educated, intellectual and analytical minds, if that is the case then you really shouldn't have chosen to watch avatar, knowing it is fantasy/sci-fi.

I say this despite not having seen the movie, purely because I am cannot understand how people expect movies to be deep and have substance when the whole point is just to be fun and enjoyable. For the times when people want substance and enjoyment on a more intellectual level, they read a book or seek out a movie which contains this.

Yes maybe enjoyable, but not deserving of earning katillions of dollars (where the hell does that money even go?) or being in the top 10 movie list.
why the fuck not? spectacle and visual appeal have always been a massive part of cinema ever since its origin. so, it's plot is lame. who fucking gives a fuck?! some of the best and most influential films have very little to do with plot at all.

I disagree. And also, it seems like you have no confidence in them to name them.

Just because you like a film doesn't mean it's good.
Samson and Delilah, minimal plot, no dialogue for two main characters, won a Camera d'Or at Cannes.

Hmm, really?

I would say liking a film pretty much defines it as good, however this is subjective and not everyone is going to universally agree on a film that is good as everyone has different tastes etc.

Think of literature. And Twilight.

Some people will find literature sucks cos its boring, for their closed minds.

And then the same people will like Twilight, but it's not good. And literature is obviously good.

But those that do like it (twilight), wouldn't they regard it as 'good'? We can see that it is quite poorly written and constructed horribly etc. This is like a parallel to avatar, those that like it for its stunning visuals and maybe even like the story, and those that hate/dislike it for not meeting their expectations of intellectual stimulation. Thus back to how it is all subjective.

a lot of andrei tarkovsky and louis bunuel are perfect examples, and they are both directors who have been recognised as pretty much gods of the film industry. the visual aesthetics are so incredibly important to both directors and their films are a vehicle for greater dialogue, a lot of which is about god. the individual plot is far less important than the way a scene is constructed

Movies don't need to do something new and exciting with a plot every time. The Avatar plot is good: it's just one you've seen before.

Do yourself a favour. Turn your brain off for a minute. Just sit back, and enjoy the experience.

+infinity to post and even more to the bold

However there is a problem when I am watching something and I feel my mind has entered a vegetative state (which is when I discontinue viewing). I like to have it thinkin about the movie/show even if just in a very 'low-powered' kind of way.

yeah i wouldn't like it very much if the cinema was full of emotionally crippling stories, i'd probably kill myself. a popcorn movie every now and then is good

Yeah this movie was a pretty perfect popcorn movie.

Amazing to watch, without a complex plot to distract from the explosions and whirling helicopter lizards. Hell entertaining.
