What units to choose for year 11? (1 Viewer)

Hey guys, i'm was just wondering about the subjects i should take for year 11. A downside is that my school only allows us to have 12 units max so i stuck picking between a couple of subjects. My favourite subjects are Commerce and Maths and i hate Science (if it helps in anyway). These structures are the ones i want to take, but i can't choose.

Structure 1
English Adv.
Maths
Maths Ext. 1
Economics
Legal Studies
Accounting
Studies of Religion 1

Structure 2
English Adv
Maths
Economics
Business Studies
Legal Studies
Accounting

Just a couple of questions
(1) Which Structure should i pick?
(2) Why?
(3) Which structure gives me a bigger chance of achieving my Dream ATAR (lols i'm gonna try)?

Really appreciate it... and if I should change either of my structures let me know and why.

12 units max? Damn.

Anyways,

1) Structure 1.
2) Because you like maths. Enjoyment + effort + good scaling = own.
3) Structure 1.

One thing: If you don't like/are not good at essays, don't do humanities unless you want to struggle or get annoyed at the subject. I liked and was good at commerce in my junior years but choosing Eco was a mistake for me. Luckily I dropped it.

You would need to work extremely hard then, because HSC legal/eco is a lot harder than commerce. At least that applied to me. I looked at a 15/15 response and I was like "oh shit". I felt so screwed for the HSC (and I only did eco) before I gained some security in picking up Physics even though it was the last term. I topped my Physics class for the Yearly.

Are you sure you don't like sciences at all? Because if you don't mind doing it, and put in effort, you'll be fine plus they scale better. I find that eco (legal should be more) is too subjective. Most of the assessments were in-class essays - not that great for maths-oriented people like me.

I do plan on doing 4U Maths in Year 12 and from what you told me I am considering to do Physics.

I am not sure about Business Studies. But I know in terms of scaling, Eco > Legal > Business Studies, and that there's essays involved with all of them.

By the way you should ask other people's opinions too, maybe your parents, and read up textbooks and look at the syllabus, because I am only just one opinion. Some people can be good at both maths and social sciences (my maths-acing friend topped eco and she didn't even do commerce!).

if you intend on taking 4u in Year 12, then structure 1 is the way to go since it includes 3u maths.
Maths and Physics

taking a few more units of maths is always complementary for physics but keep in mind that the sciences these days are more qualitative than quantitative. (check out the hsc papers and see for yourself HSC Exam Papers - Board of Studies NSW).
also for physics, if you want to do engineering courses at uni, most of them list physics as a prerequisite (although you can do a pretty rushed bridging course just before uni). so i guess doing physics opens up options.

Eco and Business Studies

do you want a more general understanding of the economy (ie pick eco) or a narrower and more specific one focused on businesses (ie pick Business studies)
seeing that you're aiming for a very high ATAR, eco would help you more with that. it is true that eco is harder than business studies, but if you're ambitious enough to aim for 99.95 ATAR, surely you'll be determined enough to work hard right? eco essays are different from english essays...
last comment: why don't you flip through the relevant textbooks and see if the content looks enjoyable to you?

Do Physics/ Legal. Physics helps a little bit in 4unit.

Woah 12 units max? Some schools have 12 units minimum but anyways...
If you're favourite subjects are math etc. then choose Ext 1 math in structure 1, that way if you are incapable of doing Math Ext 1, you can drop down. It's a lot easier and mind settling to try Math ext 1 and realise you can't do it and drop down than doing 2u and wanting to move up but your school won't let you and wondering about how you would've done in 3u.

Thanks everyone that chipped in... I think that i'll do physics and eco.

Another thing that i wanted to talk about is english. Standard and advanced scale the same, so should i do standard as it won't give a huge workload and allows me to work harder on other subjects

It's harder to get a band 5/6 in standard though.
