I am a newby starting this year in B' Commerce.

I don't think I have ever been so confused!

Do I have to worry which units I am doing now or do I wait till my academic advising time?

I tried to get an idea of my timetable but don't know which units I am suppose to choose . . .

It's best to get an idea of what units you want to do before academic advising, the advisors pretty much just look over your proposed unit choices and make sure you haven't fucked anything up.

EDIT: according to the handbook you should be looking at taking things like:
ACST101
BBA102
ECON111
MKTG101
ACCG100 or ACCG106

It does appear to be that way, you would do the cores during sem 1:
ACST101
BBA102
ECON111
MKTG101

Then do ACCG100 or ACCG106 in sem 2 while also starting your major.

Yep thats exactly right, and if your thinking of doing accounting as your major, id advise you do ACCG100 in your first semester, so you give yourself the option of ACCG101 in the second semester.

^ Honestly, you can do whatever you want. Just look up your degree in the MQ handbook and use that as a guide.

Yep u can do an elective, provided that you meet the pre-reqs for that elective. For example, i knew some ppl who chose a language elective while studying a commerce degree in first semester.

I would advise doing your timetable and choosing units BEFORE attending academic advising - it's all in the handbook and theres even links from the unit pages to their respective timetables.

This will ensure academic advising is no longer than it has to be, and you won't be one of those poor students who in 40 degree weather have to read through a 500+ page handbook looking for units to do, then try to go to find a computer to look up the timetables, etc.

Great well I think to keep things simple I will do the following then:

ACST101
BBA102
ECON111
MKTG101

Is it right that 4 units is the normal amount to do in one semester?

EDIT: On the proposed program form it has Sem 1 and 2 - Do I have to choose my Sem 2 units now too?

I was hoping I could wait till I had started.

If I do have to choose them now I am doing marketing and 3 of the core units overlap with commerce and that only leaves me with 1 (100) core unit left to study and I would prob do ACCG 100. How/ where do I look at the electives I can do to fill in the other 2 slot?

Sorry I am not a school leaver and work full time so can't get to the uni to ask them.

It would help if you knew what you wanted to major in. But in saying that, you don't HAVE to know.

Yes, 4 units/ semester is standard. Those four for sem 1 look good.

Now yes you do need to enrol for semester 2 as well, but you can always change these before semester 2 starts, so it is not a big deal what you choose - just choose something [although yuou will get limited choice in tutorial times, as they usually fill up fast].

What subjects you do really depend on what you want to major in, but looking at some of the major rules found here: Bachelor of Commerce - 2010 Course Handbook - Macquarie University

i'd suggest doing:

ACCG100 [or106 if you definitely know you do NOT want to major in accounting]

ECON110 [you're already doing micro so might as well do amcro, plus this will coutn towards an applied econometrics, eocnomics, finance, +other majors]

STAT170 [(or PSY122) - statistics, i believe, is useful - plus this will coutn towards an applied econometrics, eocnomics, finance, +other majors]

and an elective of your choice [perhaps a people or planet unit - refer to http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/2010/Units/PeopleAndPlanet]

There is no 'list' of electives - an elective is just that - a subject you elect (choose) to do, so it can be ANY suubject offered by the university, as long as you meet the pre- and co-requisties for it.

People And Planet units - one must be outside the faculty administering your degree - i.e. outside the faculty of business and economics, and the other has to be outside the department(S) administrating your major(s) (ie outside Marketing department for you)

It does not matter when your tute is placed, because for the vast majority of units, tutorials start in week 2, and tutes relate to work done in the previous week - ie week 2 tute will cover work done in lectures in week 1, etc..

Ok quick questions - I'm almost there! Event though when I get to academic advising at my time slot they will prob all be full!

So is it best to have back to back classes or is it ideal to leave 1 or 2 hours between each class to relax and look at notes, or does that just get boring?

As long as you avoid extremes you should be fine.

i.e. avoid 8 hours of class in a row, and at the same time avoid having an hour break after every single lecture / tutorial.

But that is entirely personal.

Its just according to yourself. Can u stand studying for like 6 hours straight? or u r type of people that need break every 3 hours study.. I personally always stacked my 4 subjects into 2 days so i can focus other days for other things.. eg work etc..

Wasn't that just sore on the brain? My lectures are over 3 days so I don't have that choice but I assum that didn't leave you much time to socialise at uni?

3 days for first year is normal. Youll find you have alot of free time on your hands.. dont waste it like i did.. study/work do something with it.

I honestly doubt that would happen since its a common unit for acst students
