Sure its stupid. But people seem to act like its the worst thing in the world.

In my view its no more irrational than believing on god, or thinking that we should persecute people because they engage in prostitution or enjoy ingesting particular chemicals.

For some reason it is socially acceptable to hold the aforementioned illogical views (along with many other crazy views) but people go batshit insane at the slightest whiff of racism.

Of course I am against racism, but I also think people have a right to free speech, and that most of the people that get really upset about racism are simply "feeding the trolls" and encouraging them.

EDIT: Also when I say this I mean in regards to racial slurs, as racial intolerance in the workplace and racial prejudice is, in my opinion unacceptable. But just an insult really isn't any different to swearing, once again imo.

My point is that while it is stupid, society tolerates lots of stupid opinions, but people react disproportionately badly towards stupid opinions that happen to be racist.

To use another example though, Australians often criticize people for things like being poor, living in housing commission, living in the western suburbs or being bogan. Often this is largely beyond people's control, or completely beyond their control in the case of children who are born into these circumstances.

Yet it is much more socially acceptable to slander people based on these class based attributes than it is based on race.

Also, while being born into a particular race is not a choice, racists can (and do) argue that coming to Australia is a choice, and that immigrants can choose to assimilate. Most racism is not directed at people because of their skin color, but because of their accents, cultural practices ect, people can indeed exercise control over these things. Although I find this attitude utterly stupid (I in fact support open borders and don't give a fuck about "Australian culture"), I can't see how it is any more stupid than wanting to persecute someone for their choice to smoke cannabis, or to go to/be a prostitute.

Interesting. Imagine a racially stratified society. Asians will pore through books and computers, while Europeans will build houses and mine ores underground. Black Africans, who predominantly have fast-twitch muscles, will do labour based on fast movements. Eskimos, adapted to the cold, will colonise all arctic areas. Islanders, with their immense genetic strength, will do specialised grunt labour.
